Description
Reporting to the Administrative Chief Engineer of Central Utilities and the Chief Watch Engineer/Foreman, the Watch Engineer / Mechanic will be responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining high pressure boilers, centrifugal chillers, and ancillary equipment. Besides covering the watch, the successful candidate will be repairing and maintaining the central plant’s equipment. The shift will be Thursday through Monday from 3pm to 11pm, however the ability to work scheduled overtime for shift coverage and stay for emergency repairs on all shifts, including weekends and holidays is required.

- The safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of high-pressure fire tube steam boilers, centrifugal chillers, centrifugal pumps, steam PRV stations, heat exchangers, valves, piping in the plant and building heating and cooling systems supplied by Hofstra’s Central Power Plant (CPP).
- Operate and maintain all equipment in the plant and central utilities for a 3 million square foot campus.
- Inspect and troubleshoot issues, making major and emergency repairs as needed.
- At a journeymen level, overhaul and rebuild high pressure fire tube steam boilers, auxiliary equipment for centrifugal chillers, steam PRV stations, centrifugal pumps, heat exchangers, valves, piping in the plant, as well as building heating and cooling systems supplied by Hofstra’s Central Power Plant.
- Demonstrate an understanding of rigging/material handling as required for above.
Qualifications
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as this position will be required to drive a university vehicle.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in power plant operations and watch experience, in a high-pressure plant is preferred.
- Ability to stoop, stand, climb, and frequently lift equipment and building materials to complete tasks.
- Ability to move around the grounds of the campus as needed.
- Excellent communication skills are essential.
