Job description
I seek to hire a talented urban planner / community planner for an ongoing, consulting relationship to provide options for the future of our beachside residential community.
This is a part-time remote position with an hourly pay rate. You are paid from private funds. To be clear, zero funds come from taxpayers.
My name is Loren Strand, a member of the Town of Indialantic's council. I seek a consultant to work directly with me. The town does not have an urban planner nor contract planning services.
Problem: Our town's staff and as-needed consultants are predominantly focused on the present moment (operations-minded). Some civic leaders seem satisfied with and reinforce the status quo. There is almost zero vision casting. There is low desire to tackle complex planning issues -- even as there are brilliant citizens who volunteer time / resources and desire transformational change.
Our Town: Our one-square-mile beachside town is a residential community with ~3300 residents with ~1300 households. We are located in Brevard County, Florida. The closest cities are Melbourne and Palm Bay.
I am interested in someone who is passionate about working with a community like ours and has proven successes working with similar communities. I am open to planners who have not worked with a community like ours. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant certifications.
The ideal candidate must be interested in:
- Vision casting for our community's future. Bring ideas to the table. Create opportunities. Take risks.
- Vision cast about the form of buildings, not just the use of the land. For example, aesthetics in the business zones.
- Guide the process of creating a publicly-embraced mission statement and vision statement.
- Creating community spaces. We have parks. We have no town center or other town-supported spaces that promote a day of shopping, relaxing and social connections.
- Creating cultural and recreational opportunities.
- Considering resilience, safety, infrastructure and further access to nature and outdoor activities.
- Being a "professional generalist" who will patiently explain concepts in layperson terms. There is an educational aspect as leaders are inexperienced working alongside planners.
- Synthesizing information and communicating a vision of the future by approval by the public and a governing body.
- Support implementation by suggesting and enforcing the legal tools of planning (i.e. zoning codes).
The ideal candidate must:
- Work remotely
- Communicate regularly during US Eastern hours
- Use either Zoom/Google Meet/Teams for video chats
- Use a Trello board for task management
If this post connects with your passion for community planning, I look forward to hearing from you.
