VACANCY

The City of Pomona is currently looking for a qualified at-will, hourly, part-time, Technical Specialist I (Skateboarding Program Instructor) to fill a vacancy in the Community Services Division. Hourly / part-time positions average 20 hours per week and less than 1,000 hours in a twelve (12) month period.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Education & Experience
  • High school graduate or GED equivalency required.
  • 1 year of experience in the field of skateboarding, preferably in an instructional capacity.
  • 1 year of paid or volunteer experience working directly with youth.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
License or Certificates
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class "C" driver's license and have a good driving record.
Knowledge of:
  • Instruction of skateboarding programs.
  • Best practices in risk management as related to skateboarding programs and recreation facilities.
  • Curriculum implementation and effective teaching methods in the skateboarding field.
  • Principles, practice, and techniques specific to skateboarding activities.
  • Skateboarding theories and their application to individual and group behavior; ability to inspire confidence and enthusiasm; to blend with various groups; and to maintain effective relationships with associates, participants, and the public.
  • Leadership principles and approaches to varied types of skateboarding activities including the ability to organize groups for participation in diversified skateboarding programs
Skill to:
  • Demonstrate physical competency in the area of skateboarding.
  • Operate modern office equipment and Microsoft software particularly Word, Excel and Access.
  • Assess and properly maintaining skateboarding related equipment including skateboards and safety equipment.
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Ability to :
Manage multiple program participants at once; work independently and strategically; exercise patience and professionalism. Implement recreation programming related to skateboarding. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Develop and implement skateboarding classes, camps and programs.

Ensure programmatic, contractual, grant, and City goals and deadlines are met.

Develop curriculum and teach program content appropriate to the participant’s age and skill.

Oversee and address program specific risk management and safety concerns.

Act as a liaison between staff, community members, collaborative partners and other city personnel.
Act as a resource to staff in curriculum development, participant recruitment, retention and assessing programmatic needs.
Conduct and/or attend regular meetings and training sessions that directly affect the development, planning, coordination and implementation of site programs.
Work collaboratively to develop and foster new programs and best practices throughout all program locations.
Meet deadlines while maintaining high quality of work.
Ensure established emergency and safety procedures are followed at all times.
Accurately document all incidents/accidents and ensure proper communication to all parties as appropriate.
Communicate in a positive and effective manner with all participants, City officials, parents/guardians, community members, co-workers, volunteers and guests.
Maintain professional demeanor at all times to ensure the City's image and mission statement are upheld.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment and outdoors in city parks; ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Work hours will be approximately 10-20 hours per week. Some weekends and evening shifts may be required.
Examination Procedure
Screening of qualifications and "most qualified" is based on the information provided on the official City Application.
