Job Summary


** The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

This posting will be used to fill one vacancy. The position is being posted at two levels: Transportation Generalist Senior and Transportation Generalist. If a successful candidate is not found at the Transportation Generalist Senior level, it may be filled at the Transportation Generalist level.

Examples of work for this specific vacancy includes but is not limited to:

  • Performs as survey lead worker in absence of the crew lead.
  • Sets up and operates global positioning systems, including real time kinematic global positioning systems, total station, or ground based lidar instruments
  • Assists survey lead in construction survey office activities, including setup and checking of staking notes.
  • Performs set-up, calibration, use and maintenance of survey equipment.
  • Assists survey lead in field construction by recovering or establishing horizontal and vertical control, setting and marking stakes, and pounding hubs or setting right of way monuments.
  • Assists with investigation and location of lot corners, property monuments, section corners and taking reference ties.
  • Field survey of digital terrain models, storm and sanitary sewers, and bridge clearance surveys.
  • Communicates with contractors, landowners, consultants and supervisors to report progress or review work assignment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The level of experience to perform this job at the TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST SENIOR level can be achieved with:

The level of experience to perform this job at the TGS level can be achieved with:

  • Two years performing survey (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities.

OR

  • One year of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities; PLUS one year experience performing roadway inspection, design or related activities;
  • A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying/Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year experience noted above (in order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two- way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

IF THIS POSITION IS NOT FILLED AT THE TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST SENIOR LEVEL, IT MAY BE FILLED AT THE TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST LEVEL BY UTILIZING THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.

The level of experience to perform this job at the TRANSPORTATION GENERALIST level can be achieved with:

  • Six months of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, and construction surveys, etc.), mapping, geodetic or related activities and a combination of six months experience in road maintenance, construction, materials/soils, permits, etc.;

OR

  • A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Required for both levels:

  • A valid Class D Driver’s License with no major traffic convictions in the past 5 years.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements of this job will vary, but may require the ability to joint lift up to 150 pounds maximum with frequent moving and/or lifting or otherwise transfer of objects of various weights. This job also may require walking, moving, standing, to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job may require strenuous physical labor incuding but not limited to digging, pounding stakes, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
