EXPOSURE CATEGORIES:
1. Task that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All procedures or other job related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, tissues or a potential for spills or splashes of them, are category tasks I. The appropriate use of protective measures, as described in the hospital and Department Safety manual is required.
2. Tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue but employment may require performing unplanned category I tasks.
3. Tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. Normal routine work does not involve exposure to the above.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
2. Gathers checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
3. Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.
4. Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
5. Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.
6. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
7. Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
8. Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
9. Secures tubing, cords and other sterile accessories.
10. Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
11. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
12. Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
13. Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
14. Sponges or suctions the operative site.
15. Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders.
16. Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
17. Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.
18. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
19. Performs additional counts as necessary.
20. Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
21. Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
22. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
23. Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room.
24. Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
25. Demonstrated competency in using hospital and patient care equipment.
26. Occasionally may require overtime
27. Carry out specific oral or written instructions, frequently following a simple routine.
28. Do the same task over and over, frequently in the same way.
29. Get along with all kinds of people.
30. Stand and walk for long periods of time.
31. Lift and carry things like boxes and surgical trays.
32. Use hands and fingers skillfully and easily.
33. Participates in units/hospital QI activities as requested.
34. Attends to units/department required in-services or meetings according to policy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Medium Work: Exerting up to 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, up to 1/3 of the time to move objects. Requires walking or standing to a significant degree and requires sitting a minimal amount of time.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Inside: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
Hazards:
1. Subject to exposure to infectious and contagious diseases.
2. Subject to exposure to blood borne pathogens.
3. Subject to exposure to hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids, and wastes.
4. Subject to hazards of flammable and explosive gases.
REASONING DEVELOPMENT:
Apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT:
Be able to compute standard measures, weights, ratios, volumes as are common in Surgical Procedures.
LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT:
Reading: Read and understand instructions, safety rules, medical terminology and other written materials such as policies, procedures, etc.
Writing: Write letters, correspondence and other reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Speaking: Speak with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
RELATIONSHIPS TO DATA, PEOPLE AND THINGS:
Data: Compiling: Gathering, collating, or classifying information about data, people or things. Reporting and/or carrying out a prescribed action in relation to information are frequently involved.
People: Speaking-Signaling: Talking with and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments, instructions and/or directions to helpers, subordinates or assistants.
Things: Operating-Controlling: Starting, stopping, controlling and adjusting the progress or machines or equipment.
QUALIFICATION:
Education:
1. Prior experience in Health Care and clinical setting with a minimum of one year in operating room and willing to train.
2. Must be a High School graduate.
3. Current CPR certification
Supervisory Experience and Training
Successful past experience in the clinical setting with a minimum of one year in operating room.
Job Knowledge
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique. Combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
