Duties
The Supervisory Medical Supply Tech-Sterile Processing functions as a first-level supervisor responsible for the oversight of a group of MSTs, with administrative responsibility for planning and directing the work. Oversees attendance and leave, including approval of sick and annual leave and vacation schedules. Informs higher level management of anticipated vacancies or increases in workload. Recommends promotions, reassignments, recognition of superior performance, retention or release of probationary employees or other changes of assigned personnel. Holds corrective interviews with employees, referring disciplinary problems to higher levels of management. Resolves informal complaints of employees and deals with union representatives on personnel matters. Provides technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the organizational unit.
Other duties include but are not limited to:
- The employee is under the supervision of the Chief of Sterile Processing. The Chief will assign work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provides guidance for unusually involved situations.
- The employee will work as team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to
carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written
instructions in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices. - Incumbent must meet the needs of customers while supporting VA Missions; consistently communicate
and treat customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA Staff) in a courteous, tactful, and
respectful manner; provide customer with consistent information according to established policies and
procedures; and handle conflict and problems in dealing with customers constructively and appropriately. - Organizes work methods, procedures, staffing and training and competency validation in the SPS section.
- Operates under extensively designated authority and is responsible and accountable to the SPS Chief for leadership in the formulation and operation of the SPS program.
- Acts with extensive degree of independence, citing only exception which may directly reflect upon the operations of SPS.
- Responsible for minimizing intervention by the Chief reporting deficiencies and problem situations to management.
- Directs the activities of employees in Grades GS-03 through GS-07.
- Advises higher level management of problems in the section and evaluating the performance of subordinates; handles employee complaints; assignment of work; leave approval; developing performance standards; planning; scheduling; and recommending disciplinary actions to higher level management; oversees the SPS training and competency validation programs.

Qualifications
- Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
- Experience and/or Education
- Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work.
- Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position.
- Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
- English Language Proficiency. Medical Supply Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
GS-08 Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
- Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
- Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
- Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME.
- Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues

Physical Requirements:
The employee position is approximately 70% in an office setting. The remainder will be in the decontamination and or preparation areas where the employee usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. There is frequent requirement for lifting individual instruments or instrument trays weighing up to 45 pounds from just above the floor to waist level and occasional requirements for similarly lifting baskets weighing up to fifty pounds. The technician transports trays and equipment on carts that may weigh up to 300 pounds when full. Employee must be acutely aware of safety requirements when moving these carts over slight rises such as door sills. Tension and stress are induced by the critical nature of producing work results on a pre-established time frame as well as in emergent situations. He/she must be able to read, write, and organize written material. Near vision correctable at 13 to 16 inches to a Jaeger 1 to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Full spectrum of color vision. Bilateral dexterity with the use of both hands. Reaching above shoulders, bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling and unencumbered ambulation are required of this position
