Comparative Medicine East (CME) provides health surveillance, preventative disease programs and daily husbandry and care for all laboratory animals at ABC and CRC. CME supports scientific functions related to in vivo preclinical work. The department has primary responsibility for assuring that the Animal Care Program meets the standards for continued accreditation by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and is compliant with applicable regulations. The Sr. Technician is responsible for the assistance in oversight of the husbandry and care for the animals and facility operations. He/She also has contact with animals providing direct husbandry and in vivo technical services. He/She will also train and schedule other technicians.
Major Responsibilities:
- Lead role in specific projects or initiatives critical to Comparative Medicine East
- Ensure proper stocking of supplies within vivarium, coordinating storage, and ordering when needed
- Scheduling staff husbandry and/or technical tasks
- Regularly review all applicable departmental records and logs to ensure tasks by other technicians performed within the scope of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Train other technicians, contractors, scientists, and interns
- Perform in vivo technical tasks, such as substance administration by various routes, blood/tissue collection, anesthesia, surgery, clinical scoring of animals, and associated preparation in drug formulation and study coordination
- Perform husbandry duties when needed, including cage changing, health observations, euthanasia, animal identification, and facility sanitation and maintenance
- Assist veterinary staff in clinical care of animals including health and environmental monitoring and provision of treatment as directed by the Veterinarian
- Coordinate and perform facility inspections to ensure proper functioning of operations, infrastructure, and equipment
- Review weekly logs, sanitation records, equipment certification, supply/stock expiration, etc…
- Ensure execution of all tasks in compliance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures and institutional policies
- Other duties as assigned or require
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma with LAT certification and 9 years experience in laboratory animal field, or AS with LAT and 7 years experience, or BS with LAT and 5 years experience. Or High School Diploma with LATG certification and 7 years experience, or AS with LATG and 5 years experience, or BS with LATG and 3 years experience.
- Physical dexterity, visual and auditory acuity, and sensitivity to changes in environmental conditions are utilized in daily task performance
- Problem solving ability: Must be able to recognize problems and take initiative to handle basic or common issues autonomously
- Clear, respectful, and accurate oral and written communication with co-workers and/or supervisor
- Understands and acts on detailed written or oral instructions
- Must be adaptable and flexible to meet demands of ever changing work environment
- Be able to delegate in an effective manner
- Must have good basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Maintains concise, accurate and comprehensive written records. Good oral and written communication skills
- Must have good organizational skills and keen observation skills
- Possess the initiative to take action and make process improvements and changes through innovative ideas
