SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:
The Mill Operator specializes in operating various mill equipment for steel pipe production.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follow all safety and company policies / procedures and promotes a safe culture.
- Complies with all OSHA safety requirements, work rules and regulations.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment.
- Operator various mill equipment.
- Weld and splice pipe.
- Break down coils.
- Maintain housekeeping within all production, storage and waste areas.
- Follow all work instructions, procedures, and job safety (JSA’s)
- Properly identify (mark) pipe with the use of spray paint
- Effectively communicates issues to management
- Regular, reliable, predictable attendance and performance of the essential functions
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely operate machinery certified to use – overhead crane, forklift
- Propose standard operating procedures (SOPs) and job safety analysis (JSA’s)
- Other duties may be assigned as necessary
- Sub arc welding
JOB SCOPE:
This position provides support to the Mill department with the primary focus on equipment operation.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- One year certificate from college of technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
MILL OPERATOR I – this level of Mill Operator is responsible for operation of mechanical mill, and requires minimum experience. Additionally, individuals in this position operate, work with and around various hand tools and welding equipment. Duties are routinely carried out under close supervision; however, supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. As work experience is gained and additional welding certification are obtained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility.
MILL OPERATOR II – this level of Mill Operator is responsible for performing duties described for a Mill Operator I. This level of Mill Operator requires additional training, skills, certification, and experience. Work normally is performed under limited to close supervision. As additional experience is gained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility.
MILL OPERATOR III – this level of Mill Operator is responsible for performing duties described for a Mill Operator II. This level possesses advanced qualifications, experience. Work normally is performed under minimal supervision. Employees in this position may be responsible for providing on-the-job training to new employees.
