Sleep Technologist - Sleep Lab (Part time, Nights) 20 hrs/week
Job description
Shift: Part time, Nights, Weekend as needed, 20 Hrs/week
$2,000 sign on bonus
Reporting to the Sleep Center Manager and in conjunction with the Sleep Center panel physicians, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including, but not limited to, sleep studies, continuous, bi-level and auto servo ventilation positive airway pressure titrations, mask and positive airway pressure acclimations and fittings and patient/family education in the area of sleep medicine. Participates in all quality assurance and improvement measures and processes. Accurately scores physiological data to be presented to the physician.
1. Performs diagnostic sleep studies; measures, applies and records appropriate Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electrocardiograms (ECG), Electromylogram (EMG), Electroculograms (EOG) electrodes, airflow, pressure transduced airflow, CO2 monitoring, respiratory effort, oximetry sensors and signals following the AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events and accepted protocols within the department; monitors the sleep study, multiple sleep latency test, and multiple wakefulness test while recognizing, recording and appropriately responding to physiological events per established protocols.
2. Performs therapeutic procedures in the area of sleep medicine; recognizes and responds appropriately to the patient’s medical problems and physiological events, especially cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory events, seizures, and arousals. Appropriately responds to leak and ensures optimal mask interface and fit throughout the study. Identifies indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of nasal continuous, bi-level and auto servo ventilation positive airway pressure and oxygen administration; applies and titrates therapy following established protocols.
3. Reviews entire patient record and medical history examines physician orders, and provides patient/family education in the area of sleep testing as appropriate. Accurately documents the patient medical record and sleep study per procedure. Provides mask interface and positive airway pressure fitting and acclimation prior to start of positive airway pressure titration per procedure.
4. Sets up and calibrates monitoring equipment and performs physiological calibrations. Ensures accurate recording of all required recording parameters onto the digital polysomnogram prior to the start of and during the sleep study. Properly cleans, disinfects and sterilizes appropriate equipment, electrodes, and transducers per established protocol.
5. Scores all types of sleep studies according to current guidelines and AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Event; generates sleep report summarizing sleep/wake periods, REM episodes, arousal analysis, EEG phenomena, cardiac events, respiratory events, and limb movements. Correlates respiratory and neurological events.
6. Arranges home therapy in conjunction with referring physician.
7. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
2. Current Basic Life Support CPR Healthcare Provider card.
3. Ongoing education in the field of sleep medicine at a rate of 10 continuing education units annually as defined by the AASM for technologists in an accredited sleep program; must additionally meet all AAST, BRPT and AASM educational requirements.
4. Knowledge and understanding of indications, contraindications, and adverse effects of nasal continuous, bi-level, and auto servo ventilation positive airway pressure and oxygen administration.
5. The analytical skills necessary to score sleep studies and recognize and respond appropriately to the patient’s medical problems and physiological events.
6. The communication skills necessary to interact effectively with patients and families and provide patient/family education.
7. The written skills necessary to generate summary reports and thorough clinical documentation.
8. The ability to use a computer for the acquisition, storage, retrieval and manipulation of data.
