Summary: Responsible for the general maintenance of the Fairgrounds by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Mow, water, fertilize, weed, thatch and repair lawns.
Lay sod or seeds, if necessary.
Place/move sprinklers and hoses on lawns without irrigation systems.
Clean and grease mowers as needed.
Shape and prune trees.
Program, check, and repair irrigation systems.
Apply pesticide to weeds and insects.
Assist in the transport of small buildings around the Fairgrounds.
Assist with ditching and utility installations during major construction projects.
Load/unload delivery trucks. Haul and load shavings, dirt, rocks, and tree limbs.
Hang and remove holiday decorations, puts up festoon lighting.
Install and remove stage covers.
Set up and take down of portable structures (tents).
Clean up and winterize all beds.
Answer phone and radio calls and dispatch personnel to related calls.
Assist other departments as needed
Competency:
Must possess public relations skills, with the ability to establish and keep effective working relationships with others. Must be skilled in oral communications with good organizational skills, flexibility, the ability to work well under pressure and pay attention to detail. Must work independently and have the ability to analyze situations accurately and take effective actions with minimal supervision.

Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 1-3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have extensive knowledge of fairgrounds and facilities, the safe operation/use of all equipment and tools, extensive knowledge and care of plant material, and knowledge of greenhouse management and organization. Experience with watering, irrigation system set up and maintenance, weeding, fertilization, pesticide applications, care of festoon lighting, and general seasonal maintenance of grounds. Must also have basic electrical and carpentry knowledge. Must have knowledge of care and maintenance of plant material, pruning, transplanting, watering and growing of plant material in greenhouse/cold frame. Must have knowledge of different varieties of plant material for fertilizing and pest control. Must also have knowledge of all interior and exterior landscapes, care and maintenance of irrigation systems, and knowledge and care of a variety of flower bulbs. Must have experience in the maintenance of festoon lighting and have an overall eye for maintenance and care of grounds.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
No Computer skills needed.
Certificates and Licenses:
Washington state pesticide license and a commercial driver’s license.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Material/Equipment Used:
Two-ton, one-ton, back hoe, excavator, front end loader, forklift, boom forklift, watering truck, dump truck, sweeper, manlift, platform lift, steam cleaner, chainsaw, rototiller, edger, sod cutter, thatcher, aerator/plugger, fertilizer spreader, orchard sprayer, (wire feed) welder, tractors, lawnmowers (including riding), weed eaters, blowers, jackhammer, rollers (compactors) and various hand tools.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and work in high, precarious places.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

During peak activity times, extra daily hours and periods with no days off may be required.
