Senior Application Development Engineer
The Senior Application Development Engineer provides production technical support to our PMMA customers and develops new applications for our PMMA materials.
Essential Functions
Technical Service and Development Support 40%
Support customer technical service both remotely and in-person, including supporting customer trials and application development. Set up equipment, conduct and troubleshoot polymer processing for customers. Help conduct customer training about Trinseo PMMA products and technology. Work with Trinseo global sales and development engineers and respond to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
New application/process development 40%
- Develop new testing capability or equipment capability, at our Philadelphia-area R&D facility, as needed to support new product and application development for PMMA products, with a focus on extrusion and co-extrusion applications.
- Conduct trials, develop process parameters, complete characterization, data analysis and prepare reports/presentations to support new developments for key projects, or programs. Able to interpret data and articulate results within work group as well as draw conclusions to help steer experimental planning.
- Coordinate with analytical sciences team to complete testing and summarize results.
- Generates and documents results to support product registration, technical literature, research direction, patent applications, etc.
- Stays up to date on developments in processes, equipment, software, design and data analysis
- Participate in conferences, tradeshows, and industry trade organizations based on business needs and interests
Process Expertise and Safety 10%
- Develop new processing and testing expertise to support our new developments. Operate all equipment and conduct experiments safely and with proper precautions involved.
- Ensures laboratory is maintained in good working order. Has responsibility for operation, training, and maintenance on specific equipment.
- Actively participates in Trinseo’s safety programs and leads relevant safety projects as required, in our R&D campus.
Reporting 10%
Provide regular updates of individual projects through monthly reviews/reports, technical reviews, and stage-gate reviews.
Qualifications
BS in Polymer/Material Science, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer/Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar technical field.
Minimum 5 yr industrial experience, including polymer processing and testing
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Experience and/or training in polymer characterization, testing and processing. Hands-on experience with profile and co-extrusion is highly desirable
- Mechanical Aptitude: Hands-on orientation to conduct experiments and maintain equipment.
- Prior knowledge / experience with weathering standards and methodology is beneficial
- Proficiency with PC software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, experimental design software).
- CAD experience is beneficial
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal and presentation).
List of Key Internal/External Relationships
Will develop strong personal relationships with our customers, interacting with everyone from the VP of Engineering to the technician running our material on an extruder. Must have the business acumen to work with purchasing and NBD and the technical skills to work with R&D PhDs.
Will have similar interaction internally, operating as part of the commercial team embedded in the R&D facility. Must develop strong relationships with our R&D group, interfacing with research scientists and technicians running lab equipment. Also daily interaction with the sales and new business development teams, making joint customer visits, reporting insights from customer interactions, and coordinating internally to get customer needs met.

To perform the essential functions of this job, the individual is required to lift/move.
Local Requirements:
Expected to be present in the King of Prussia (Philadelphia) research facility 3 days per week on average.
