General Overview:

Security Officers are responsible for safeguarding all art objects on museum premises and preventing loss or damage to art objects and museum assets at all times. Security officers also serve as the primary gatekeepers of the staff/delivery entrance and play an important role to the operations of the museum.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assure security of art objects in galleries and on premises at all times.
  • Observe security monitors and oversee staff/delivery entrance; facilitate checking in and out of staff credentials daily and deliveries of non-exhibition-related packages.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the security technical equipment including cameras, alarms, and communications; ensure they are functioning properly at all times.
  • Physically patrol the building regularly to protect the museum property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.
  • Serve as Guard in galleries for short periods and for special events as scheduled.
  • Provide immediate response to alarms and other emergency situations; resolve complaints and immediately address any issues that arise regarding the security of the premises, objects, visitors, and employees.
  • React calmly and appropriately to emergencies, and cope well during such conditions.
  • Represent the museum with the highest level of integrity and professionalism. Advocate for and adhere to museum policies.
  • Contribute to and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Maintain control of sensitive keys, key access cards, and visitor credentials.
  • Assure confidentiality of all records and proprietary information.
    Keep record of museum property that is brought into or removed from the building by museum personnel.
  • Write detailed reports for all incidents involving criminal acts or injury.
  • Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and unsecured doors/windows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of security operations, safety practices in a business environment, and enforcement procedures.
  • Ability to anticipate, intervene, and prevent potentially harmful circumstances to artwork.
  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism, adhere to museum policies, and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Use logic and reasoning skills to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, and approaches to problems.
  • Ability to exercise judgement as to the most appropriate approach to enforcement procedures.
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
  • Technical capacity, working knowledge of security equipment including cameras, alarms, and communications.
  • Computer skills to complete forms and paperwork and to use email.
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written and verbal requests and work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, product information manuals, and instructions.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently as well as an integral part of the team
  • Dependability, flexibility, and adaptability in a dynamic event-driven environment.
  • Physically, mentally, and emotionally able to perform in a fast-pace environment while remaining flexible to changing event particulars.
  • Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations and help resolve conflicts with tact and courtesy.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to stay alert.
  • Ability to work on your feet for up to 6–8 hours at a time.


Requirements and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; college, technical school, or training in security management, security systems, and/or security operations
  • Two (2) years professional work experience in security or police work, which included using computerized security systems to secure fixed assets
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for the above qualifications.
  • Requires proficiency in Microsoft Office and other job-related computer software programs and equipment.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado drivers’ license throughout employment.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check.

Hours and Work Schedule:

This is a part-time hourly position (8-20 hours/week) that requires availability for weekends, evenings, potentially graveyard shifts (midnight–8 a.m.), holidays, and must be available for call-out during emergencies or other critical events. This position is nonexempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and will receive overtime pay for all hours worked in excess of forty in a seven-day workweek or over twelve hours in a day.
