Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

The mission of the Instrumentation Division is to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation required for experimental research programs at Brookhaven Lab and to maintain the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. Development of facilities is motivated by present Brookhaven research programs and anticipated future directions of research. Our work has a significant impact on programs throughout the world that rely on state-of-the-art radiation detectors and readout electronics.

Position Description

The Instrumentation Division at BNL is looking for a Scientific Associate to work on an exciting project related to nonlinear on-chip waveform processing for radiation detector front-ends.

The chosen candidate will work with a team of BNL researchers to explore non-linear digital filtering as a computationally efficient yet high performance alternative to established methods (such as artificial neural networks) for real-time on-chip waveform processing. This is a 2-year part-time, position at approximately 20 hours/wk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design computationally efficient algorithms for extracting high-level features (peak amplitude, energy, time over threshold, etc.) from noisy digitized pulse data.
  • Extend these algorithms to recover signal features even in the presence of pulse pile-up, i.e., near-coincidence between the times of occurrence of two or more pulses.
  • Develop an automated design flow (based on MATLAB HDL Compiler) to convert high-level implementations of the algorithms to RTL code suitable for logic synthesis.
  • Collaborate with other researchers in the group to synthesize the generated RTL code using standard digital ASIC design tools (Cadence) and evaluate the resulting on-chip area and power consumption.
  • Participate in the drafting of invention disclosures and publications related to the proposed research.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or closely related field of basic or applied science.
  • Experience in minimizing the computational complexity of real-time DSP algorithms.
  • Knowledge of real-time digital signal processing (DSP).
  • Experience in prototyping of DSP algorithms using MATLAB.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced degree or in pursuit of PhD.Basic knowledge of radiation detectors.
  • Experience in using MATLAB HDL Compiler.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This is a 2-year, part-time position at approximately 20 hours/wk. Both remote and on-site working arrangements are acceptable, with the exact mixture to be determined in consultation with the supervisor.
