Job Summary:
Omar D. Blair is currently seeking a School Counselor for grades 3-5. The School Counselor helps lead a school-wide approach to identifying, securing and coordinating resources that ensure success for scholars. ODB categorizes this support into four main areas: scholar support, team collaboration, family engagement, and community connections. The School Counselor ensures direct support for scholars, the inclusion of families through partnership, collaboration with staff and the integration of services to scholars.
Required Qualifications:
- School Counselor certification and license from an CDE accredited program
- Master's Degree or higher in School Counseling as defined by accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs
- Minimum of 100 clock hour practicum
- Minimum of 600 clock hour internship, with multiple grade levels of students under the supervision of a licensed school counselor
- Passing of the Colorado state approved content exam: PLACE #41 (min. score: 220) or PRAXIS 5421 (min. score: 156)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Apply clinical experience directly to students, guide the development and implementation of initial and ongoing referral, coordination, and follow-up of a variety of services for children needing additional support
- Provide direct services to scholars and teachers based on the referral process and on the School Counselor’s own background and experience (SEL, BIPs 504s, etc.)
- Maintain records, such as referral date and documentation of student support services and interventions
- Work in collaboration with Special Education colleagues to coordinate support services for students and communication with parents regarding student needs
- Provide appropriate follow-up to ensure that scholars’ needs are being met
- Act as a point of contact for outside organizations working with scholars and their families
- Meet with administration, the Scholar Support Team and teachers to collaborate about scholar needs and the MTSS process
- Plan and provide short-term individual and small group counseling services to students as an intervention
- Support with the coordination and organization of school community engagement events
- Communicate and collaborate with families to address scholar needs
- Update data and complete reports on scholar data, observations and next steps
- Support with scholar supervision during morning, lunch and afternoon times (specifically scholars on caseload)
- Conduct classroom observations of scholars (peer to peer comparison)
- Support with Tier I (2nd Step), Tier II and TIer III interventions for scholars
- Train and support staff with Tier 1 SEL curriculum planning and implementation (2nd Step and Zones of regulation).
- Conduct district safety/crisis protocols including Suicide Risk Reviews, and Threat Assessments
- Consult with teachers about building classroom connections, effective classroom management and the role of noncognitive factors in scholar success
- Model professionalism and school values of kindness, excellence, wonder, equity and collaboration
- Participate with school, district and state required professional development
- Perform other minimal duties assigned
Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong leadership skills, self motivated and ability to work with minimal oversight
- Effective communicator with strong oral and written skills that work with all audiences
- Demonstrate creativity, flexibility, and perseverance in dealing with challenging learning, behavioral, family, and classroom situations
- Demonstrate ability to observe, evaluate, report, and record students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health
- Understanding of social emotional interventions and crisis management experience
- Proven at being an active participant in a supportive professional community that fosters respect, trust, risk taking, open-mindedness, flexibility, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a positive team player
- Working knowledge of proactive communication with colleagues about scholar needs to ensure integrated support
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines
