Job description
The Dewar Lab in the Department of Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University is seeking an enthusiastic molecular biology/biochemistry research tech to aid in the lab’s studies of DNA replication and repair. This basic science work is highly relevant to cancer biology, biology of aging, and environmental toxicology. The Dewar lab relies heavily on biochemistry and molecular biology, and extensively employs an in vitro DNA replication system derived from frog egg extracts. For examples of the type of research that will be undertaken see: Van Ravenstein et al, 2022, EMBO J; Kavlashvili et al, 2023, Nat Struct Mol Biol; and Campos et al, 2023, Cell Rep.

The Dewar lab is a mid-sized lab seeking a research tech who will spend most of their time performing research, with some time spent maintaining lab infrastructure. The new research tech will be directly mentored and instructed by the Principle Investigator, Dr Dewar, in planning, conducting, and presenting research. It is expected that the new research tech will produce enough data for a first author publication within 2 years of joining the lab. We have a strong post-baccalaureate training record: our past two research techs each produced enough data for a first author publication and were admitted to PhD programs in the biomedical sciences. The Dewar lab also: prioritizes wellness; is committed to work-life balance; and strives to be a diverse, inclusive, and equitable working environment. Overall, this is an excellent opportunity for any recent college graduate looking to obtain research experience before applying to graduate school or medical school.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists in Research and Development:

  • Uses agarose gels to analyze radioactive DNA intermediates of DNA replication and repair
  • Uses protein gels and Western blotting to analyze proteins bound to DNA during different stages of DNA replication and repair
  • Designs and clones DNA templates for in vitro replication assays
  • Expresses and purifies proteins in bacteria and insect cells
  • Tests antibodies by immunoprecipitation and western blotting
  • Establishes and maintains human cell lines, and perform basic cell culture experiments

Maintains the lab’s frog (Xenopus laevis) colony:

  • Organize and maintain a healthy frog colony
  • Induce egg laying by injecting frogs with hormones
  • Collect eggs for lab members’ experiments

Performs general lab and administrative duties:

  • Prepare buffers and reagents
  • Order supplies
  • Receive packages
  • Other tasks as directed by supervisor
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
  • Being comfortable working with animals is necessary.
  • Ability to perform all basic calculations related to buffer composition (Molarity, dilution factor, etc.) is necessary.
