Job Description
Job Summary:
Teledyne FLIR develops and manufactures sensors for the detection of trace levels of explosives and other hazardous chemicals. Successful candidates will be part of a team responsible for in-depth research, discovery and problem-solving related to chemical detection for US Government and Commercial markets. Our products are based on “outside-the-lab” platforms and encompass detection and identification instruments for explosives, narcotics, chemical and biological weapons, toxic industrial chemicals, and other hazardous materials. The Research team supports the development of these products by performing testing of equipment and technologies to characterize performance, assisting with troubleshooting, and, as needed, supporting test efforts at third-party facilities. The technologies involved may range in maturity from early developmental concepts to production-ready designs. This position will include support of that testing, as well as assistance with general lab maintenance, laboratory safety, and occasional testing using analytical laboratory instrumentation.
The position will principally be involved in the development of new sensors employing lasers for spectroscopy. The successful candidate will have experience in laboratory optical setup and testing, and preferably experience with ultrafast (femtosecond) pulsed lasers, pulse shaping, and other associated techniques.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development, troubleshooting, and testing of proof-of-concept/prototype equipment.
- Assist with the planning, design, and execution of experiments. Analyze data and report results to manager and team for 2 or more projects on a weekly basis for Stillwater, in the laboratory and in the field.
- Perform exploratory testing to evaluate new concepts for improving sensor performance.
- Participate in lab and departmental meetings.
- Travel to support testing of equipment at third-party facilities.
Job Qualifications:
Required Job Qualifications:
- Graduate-level degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related engineering disciplines
- 3-5 years’ experience with lasers and spectroscopy
- Experience with ultrafast (femtosecond) lasers
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- High energy, proactive orientation, self-motivated
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with team members and customers
- Perform basic test design – define the question being asked and develop single-variable experiments to answer
- Act independently to drive experimentation & testing
- Drive toward solutions to project goals
- Compile data in a way it can be shared across the organization on a weekly basis
- Able to troubleshoot and resolve science and project issues
- Communicate with team members to ensure project goals and timelines are met
- Strong Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) skills required
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Experience with coherent Raman spectroscopy is preferred
- Experience with wet chemistry and good laboratory practices is preferred
