The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.

Reappointment is possible for 2 more years based on performance and availability of funds.

As part of a three-year NASA-sponsored Ocean Salinity Science Team project, the Research Associate will lead the development, testing, and analysis of a high-resolution coupled ice-ocean circulation model of the Bering Sea. The model and available satellite and in-situ observations will be used to understand seasonal and inter-annual variability of the shelf-interior ocean salinity exchange and the nature of the satellite sea surface salinity signal.

Position Duties
25% Model development and implementation.
40% Analysis of model output along with satellite and other observational products.
20% Preparation of manuscripts for publication.
10% Presentation of scientific results.
5% Professional development.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
  • A PhD degree in physical oceanography, applied mathematics, physics or similar disciplines.
  • Experience modeling geophysical systems (e.g., ocean, atmosphere, ice).
  • Excellent quantitative analytical skills.
  • A record of scientific publication.
  • Strong communication skills.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience with the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) or a similar community ocean model.
  • Familiarity with models of sea ice dynamics and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with model couplers.
  • Expertise with FORTRAN, MPI, Matlab, Python and Linux.
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Travel to science meetings may be required.
