Job Overview
The Research Associate will aid in radiation metabolomic studies, space research related studies, and molecular biology experiments. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Executing radiation metabolomic experiments (cells, mice) and collection of samples (urine, blood, saliva, tissues
  • Processing cell, human, and mouse biofluids and tissues for mass spectrometry analysis (LC-MS, GC-MS, for metabolomics and lipidomics)
  • Performing molecular biology and biochemistry assays, including but not limited to DNA/RNA isolation, PCR and RT-qPCR, protein isolation, ELISA, colorimetric and fluorescent assays, and western blots.
  • Assisting with basic bioinformatic analysis and preparation of graphs and figures.
  • Performing basic lab management, such as ordering and lab upkeeping.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in biology/biochemistry or Bachelor’s degree with strong research skills and previous experience.
  • Mouse handling experience and some familiarity with mouse surgery
  • Basic computer skills and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently, with multitasking capabilities
  • Good organizational skills and record keeping
Preferred qualifications
  • Training in radiation with minor dosimetry assessment
  • General microscopy
  • Tissue culture experience
  • Mouse handling or willingness to learn
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
Work Interactions
The incumbent will have a central role in the laboratory’s radiation countermeasures and bio dosimetry projects which are supported by NIAID. These projects rely heavily on in vivo irradiation of select mouse models and collection of tissues and biofluids.
