General Purpose: Conduct research in order to develop novel environmentally-sustainable polymers.

Position Responsibilities: As a Research Associate, primary responsibilities include:

• Conduct research in polymer synthesis, including precursor synthesis, polymerizations, chemical modification of polymers.
• Evaluate polymer materials with respect to mechanical and thermal properties.
• Support the writing of reports and proposals.
• Assist in writing of scientific papers to peer-reviewed journals.
• Communicate regularly with research sponsor to ensure timely progress.
• Assist with supervision of PhD and undergraduate research students.
• Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills:

• Handle chemicals safely
• Conduct wet-chemistry research
• Conduct chemical analysis
• Perform polymerizations
• Characterize polymers using standard polymer characterization techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infra-red spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, mechanical analysis, etc.

Education:

• Minimal Qualifications: PhD in chemistry, materials science & engineering, chemical engineering, or closely related field
• Successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge/experience in job field, including: conducting research in polymer synthesis and characterization.

Experience:

• Research in polymer synthesis, particularly polyurethanes. Experience with polymer characterization techniques.
