Job Description
Under the direction of the Surgical PI Director, assists the Chair of Surgery in improving the quality of care throughout the division for Surgery. Collaborates with both physicians to plan, implement and evaluate surgical care through the use of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
- Coordinates the performance Improvement Patient Safety Program for the Surgical service in collaboration with the PI Medical Director and Chairman of Surgery.
- Coordinates Surgical PI committee meetings. Provides input into the agenda and reports significant trends, issues, and outstanding items. Documents all minutes and assists in the follow-up of all issues.
- Oversees the collection, tracking, and benchmarking of surgical PI issues related to patient care.
- Correlates surgical PI outcomes and PI findings with NSQIP data for adherence to ACS criteria.
- Maintains NSQIP database to ensure adequate documentation as required by ACS.
- Produces and analyzes trended data and provider specific profiles.
- Assists in the preparation of any documentation and reports as requested by the Chair of Surgery of hospital administration.
- Attends mandatory NSQIP updates and external education programs as needed.
- Assists with preparation for site surveys.
- Assists with maintaining surgical policies and procedures.
- Identifies areas of improvement and education using PI data.
- Instructs others on pertinent standards and guidelines and ensures adherence to such.
- Performs all other related tasks as defined by the Surgical PI director and Chairman of Surgery.
- Manages and maintains operations in compliance with NYSDOH and JCAHO standards.
- On a rotating weekend schedule, in conjunction with the staffing office, manages all unit staffing and scheduling activities to maintain adequate staffing levels as per patient acuity and census in order to ensure safe quality patient care.
- Provides hospital-wide Nursing Administrative coverage on a rotating weekend schedule.
- Ensures accurate interpretation of the philosophy and objectives of the department of nursing and staff’s understanding of the mission and the vision of the hospital and the department of nursing.
Minimum Qualifications
- Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
- Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty, or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or
- A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
