The Operating Room Nurse is a licensed registered nurse responsible for assisting the surgeon during operative procedures in the operating room. The OR Nurse may also act as a scrub or First Assist. The circulating nurse will be responsible for the set-up of procedures and maintaining a safe patient environment throughout.
Education, Training, Experience:
1. Currently licensed to practice nursing in the state.
2. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
3. Membership in state, local or national organizations preferred
4. BLS and ACLS required, if not currently ACLS certified, certification must be obtained within 9 months of date of hire.
5. A minimum of two years experience as an OR Nurse.
6. Knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
7. Management level experience in an outpatient surgery setting.
Responsibilities:
1. Evaluate and complete assessment of patient needs to provide supportive care before, during and after procedures and maintains complete electronic procedure documentation.
2. Communicate pertinent information to all staff members.
3. Provide a safe environment for patients preventing potential injury. Investigate and intervene in problem situations reporting appropriate information to supervisor and documenting accordingly.
4. Maintain equipment and supplies.
5. Assist the surgical team as a scrub, if needed.
6. Cleaning and disinfection of equipment used.
7. Operate and troubleshoot procedure room and patient monitoring equipment.
8. Anticipate and assist with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and medications.
9. Ensure the informed consent is completed prior to procedure.
10. Accountable for the administration of drugs, IV procedures and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures in a safe and accurate manner. Administer IV sedation under the direction of physician.
11. Provide guidance to other staff members assisting with orientation.
12. Consult with appropriate supervisor or physicians as needed.
13. Seek educational opportunities; accept responsibility for own professional growth and development.
14. Participate with in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
15. Accept direction from supervisor or physicians and adhere to established routines.
16. Maintain patients right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside of the work area or within hearing range of visitors/family or patient.
17. Function within the legal limits of nursing practice.
18. Participate in the Quality Assurance program.
19. Assist in Crash cart maintenance and defibrillator checks.
