Summary:
AFR Director for Ash Grove Cement West Region will be responsible for developing Alternative Fuels strategy, and operational roadmap and actively executing the agreed-upon roadmap via well-organized, thought-through industrial action plans aimed at developing new or/and enhancing existing AFR co-processing and pre-processing operations as a part of a new line of business. The individual will be responsible for all commercial, operational, safety, regulatory, and environmental aspects of operating AFR pre-processing facilities and AFR material handling at the plant sites, including but not limited to facilities operated by 3rd party providers for the benefit of AGC plants – Seattle, Durkee, Montana City, and Leamington plants.
The individual will work closely with MTS and GTS subject matter experts, plant operational teams, regional logistics team and external partners to insure that AFR development strategically aligns with Regional Goals and Objectives and incorporate best practices in waste-to-energy and waste recycling.
Results of the activities will be gauged by the ability to deliver tangible variable cost savings in fuels and raw materials cost categories, reduction in CO2 emissions from the use of traditional fuels in the cement manufacturing process, and top-line growth of AFR revenue/tip fees. Specific focus will be required to develop linkages between various CRH Americas business units to drive circularity solutions by working collaboratively across regional businesses.

What you’ll be contributing:
Develop & continuously evolve a strategic regional plan for each cement plant focused on increasing usage of industrial and municipal waste by-products as alternative for traditional fuels and materials to drive optimization of cash costs at AGC cement plants, contribute to landfill diversion & CO2 reduction- Promote the mindset of “Tell me what waste is available, my AFR network will find a way to use it
- Build strategic relationship with key industrial waste generators
- Drive importance of AFR to stay in business in an emerging environment where stakeholders (public, NGO’s) view cement plants primarily as GHG emitters and not partners in waste diversion
- Develop and execute on strategy to enter pre-processing operations to increase AGC’s AFR business offering and relevance to local waste generators and improve economical value add
- Continuously review of the local market to identify and build relationships with new waste generators and waste processors
- Track and report all relevant AFR KPI’s and related performance initiatives and maintain indicative P&L for Region’s AFR business
- Actively drive maximization of AFR KPIs (AF%, $/mmBTU, $ Gross Value Added)
- Closely work with plant ops team to understand & remove roadblocks related to use of AFR
- Drive continuous increase in $ GAV metric (Gross Value Added $from usage of alternative fuels and materials at the plant)
- Promote strong commercial practices to maximize tip fees for waste streams received
- Manage ops performance of supplier & partners within AFR value change (transport, processors, etc.)
- Own and manage AFR budget process related to plant’s AFR usage, support plant budgeting and forecasting processes
- Support the development of an Americas Cement AFR CAPEX investment plan
- Work collaboratively with the Environmental Dept on AFR use and ensure knowledge management & transfer related to AFR
- Collaborate with the Plants and Environment Dept to proactively develop AFR permitting strategy
- Monitor existing and proposed environmental law to identify AFR market opportunities (e.g. landfill taxes, bans, subsidies, waste management programs)
- Collaborate with Corporate Environmental representatives to operate alternative fuels systems in compliance with environmental regulations and to plan and prepare CAPEX requests that include appropriate controls and equipment necessary to obtain permits suitable for desired AFR sources
- Proactively contribute to development and knowledge transfer across Americas Cement AFR network of partners and experts
- Collaborate in the development of Americas Cement AFR safety policy and guidelines
To succeed in this position, you will need:
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s in engineering, finance, of other science field
- MBA is preferred
Work Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in the material recycling operations, waste-to-energy or CleanTech industry, with strong emphasis on business development, strategic planning, and business management
- 5+ years of experience in industrial manufacturing operation
- 3+ years of progressive experience in accounting, budgeting, and planning
Knowledge/Skill Requirements/ Others
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Spanish or/and French is an asset)
- Proficient in use of computer, Excel, SAP, PowerPoint, Word
- High resistance to stress
- Demonstrated track level in successful people management
- Demonstrated problem solving skills
- Proactively approaches responsibilities

- This is sedentary in nature but may require occasional periods of standing and walking
Work Environment
- This position is based in an indoor, climate-controlled office space
- Available for periodic traveling (up to 50% of the time)
