We have an exciting opportunity to hire Two (2) Corrections Recreational Specialist 2s at the Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP) in Salem, Oregon! Candidates may be required to work some weekends for special events. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and could be used to fill future vacancies.
The intent of this recruitment is to fill these vacancies with fully qualified Recreation Specialists, however, consideration for developmental or WOC may be considered. All interested parties should apply!
If filled as a rotation, this may last from 6 months to 1 year. Current State employees will be required to attach a Supervisor’s authorization to apply.

Duties
As the Correctional Recreation Specialist, you provide program assessment, design, coordinate and implement a wide variety of social, cultural, and athletic skill acquisition and leisure time activities along with a variety of security functions.
In this position you are responsible for developing and coordinating facility events, AIC activities and Life Skills programs; inventorying and monitoring recreation equipment and other Life Skills supplies; and assess the availability of funding, equipment, facility space, and community resources. Design AIC program proposals for submission to your supervisor and superintendent for review and approvals. You provide supervision and serve as a liaison for all volunteers, staff, and the community to ensure training, orientation, and facility familiarization requirements are met.
What are the Minimum Qualifications?

  • three years of experience assessing, developing, coordinating, and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities OR.
  • a Bachelor's degree in Recreational Management, Physical Education or a related field.

Working Conditions
This position works inside an adult correctional facility and may encounter angry, hostile, or abusive Adult in Custody (AIC), which could result in personal injury, death or becoming a hostage. You are responsible for handling AIC incidents in the immediate work area as well as preventing escapes by proper control of keys, tools, equipment, and other potential contraband. You are required to report and document unusual incidents.
This position may require extensive standing and/or walking, both indoors and outdoors, possibly during inclement weather and may require some travel by motor vehicle for coordination with community volunteers and collection of donations. You must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record or an acceptable alternate means of transportation. You are subjected to be called back in the event of an emergency and may be re-assigned to any position as needed.
Requirements for Employment
You must be able to pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) computer and fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following convictions are likely to result in being disqualified for this position: felony convictions, computer theft, identify theft and fraud. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range. Also provided are fully paid retirement program, modest life insurance policy, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave.
