Reading Specialist

Elementary Level (North Falmouth School)


2023-2024 School Year


Qualifications:

  • Massachusetts Licensure in Elementary 1-6
  • Massachusetts Licensure in Reading (All)
  • Bachelor’s degree in elementary education required
  • Master’s degree in reading and/or literacy preferred
  • SEI endorsement preferred
  • Experience with reading planning and executing intervention and/or inclusive instructional practices preferred
  • Understanding of Second language acquisition and its relationship to literacy learning preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Such other alternatives as the Superintendent of Schools may deem acceptable or appropriate

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with classroom teachers and administration, uses assessment data to identify students who are not making adequate progress and are in need of intervention and subsequent progress monitoring.
  • Provides reading instruction and intervention for children who are identified for additional support and services.
  • Conducts progress monitoring.
  • Employs a variety of teaching techniques to ensure student engagement, growth, and achievement.
  • Supports the development of phonemic awareness and phonics: principles, knowledge, and instructional practices.
  • Adjusts instruction for individual students based upon analysis of literacy assessment data and offers strategies to colleagues to employ in the classroom.
  • Selects and uses of appropriate programs, materials, and technology for reading instruction.
  • Serves as a resource for classroom teachers in terms of administering assessment, selecting reading materials, and planning instruction.
  • Implements methods to support classroom teachers and other service providers in the improvement of reading instruction, including consultation and professional development.
  • Uses varied approaches and practices for writing instruction, including assessment of writing skills and their relationship to reading.
  • Participates in Instructional Support Team and Special Education Team meetings with attention to children’s strengths and challenges in literacy/language arts.
  • Utilizes SEI strategies to support all learners assigned.
  • Communicates with parents/guardians and counselors about the progress of individual students.
  • Attends and participates in regularly scheduled meetings throughout the school year for literacy/ language arts teachers from across the district.
  • Such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the principal and/or Assistant Superintendent/Director of Teaching & Learning

SALARY: In accordance with FEA Unit A contract
