Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the world’s leading research and development laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, is seeking to hire a researcher to work in NREL’s Commercial Vehicle Team in the Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences (CIMS), with expertise in vehicle powertrains, system modeling, data analytics, and techno-economic analysis. The employee will work with other engineers/researchers in CIMS and industry partners to perform research on vehicle decarbonization technologies including advanced powertrains, deployment strategies, technoeconomic analysis, develop/improve models, and perform data analytics.
The position is focused on vehicle/powertrain modeling and simulation, related data analytics, technoeconomic, and developing research to identify, inform, and overcome barriers for vehicle decarbonization. The position includes the following:
- Develop models and perform simulation of advanced powertrain performance, economics and emissions, and national scale impacts.
- Apply data, analysis, models, and research to support multiple commercial vehicle engineering research projects.
- Develop new innovative research to advance the state of commercial vehicle R&D.
- Develop software tools, models, and novel analysis methodologies to support the team’s research objectives. Apply professional software development practices and facilitate revision control (Git/GitHub).
- Work with team and industry partners to analyze the operational behavior of medium and heavy-duty vehicles for both on-road and non-road applications and evaluate the performance of new technologies such as fuel cells, hybrid drivetrains, all-electric drivetrains, autonomous controls, and alternative fuels to facilitate further development and deployment of these advanced technologies.

Basic Qualifications
For Researcher III Level
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience .
For Researcher II Level
Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience
- Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in vehicle powertrain modeling, transportation decarbonization technologies, and techno-economic analysis.
- Engineering or equivalent background, demonstrating an understanding of automobile technology, physics and physical principles relating to vehicles, or similar discipline.
- Solid experience in software programming. Particularly interested in engineering tool development in Python and Rust. Additional capabilities of interest include MATLAB, R/Shiny, and similar languages.
- Experience with vehicles, vehicle data, vehicle data acquisition, powertrain electrification, evaluation of energy efficiency and/or emissions in commercial vehicle applications
- Strong collaboration skills—thrives working in a collaborative team environment but is comfortable working independently when necessary.
- Motivation to drive high engineering standards on the team through structured technical work, code review, testing, and knowledge sharing.
The ideal candidate would also possess at least some of the following qualifications:
- Experience with high performance/ and/or cloud based scientific computing, big data management, and machine learning and/or deep learning.
- Experience with open source, collaborative software development and use of tools such as Git/GitHub or GitLab for version control.
- Knowledge of geospatial data analysis/visualization.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $77,600 - $139,700
Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $71,300 - $117,600
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
