JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Peer Support Specialist
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Peer Support Specialist is a helping professional with lived experience that provides a caring and personal approach in supporting of treatment plans and skill development for clients of our program. The Peer Support Specialist provides a variety of recovery-oriented services to individuals who have self-identified as desiring peer supports, to promote greater independence, community integration and recovery from mental illness and/or addiction. Services provided by peers (people in addiction recovery or with co-occurring mental health disorders) include a wide range of supports, services, and advocacy that contribute to a client’s ability to engage in ongoing treatment.
Schedule: Four 10 hr shifts or Three 10-12 hr shifts
Location: This position is in Chiloquin, Oregon
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Exemplify recovery principles in order to show by example that recovery is possible and attainable. Provide high quality peer support; share their own recovery story as appropriate.
- Monitor for disruptive behaviors, set boundaries and engage positively with clients and model recovery-based relationships, supporting staff and client safety in The Stronghold spaces.
- Work with clients to identify wellness and recovery goals. Coordinate and consult with other team members to keep team informed of issues and progress.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and JotForm’s.
- Document all peer contact at time of service.
- Facilitate activity groups.
- Coordinate pro-social activities in the community.
- Support clients in establishing community integration, including, but not limited to accessing recovery meetings, faith-based support, clean and sober recreation, etc.
- Work with Operations Manager by performing job duties as told and to assist in developing and supporting new and ongoing programming included but not limited to: peer-led healing and recovery groups, routine events throughout the year.
- Transport clients within the Chiloquin and Klamath County area, as needed.
- Attend and positively participate in required team meetings.
- Cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with clients, staff, and other community partners.
- Identify and facilitate clients’ access to community resources.
- Coordinate property tours to potential clients and community partners.
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as building food boxes and taking clients to the clothing closet. Cleaning and maintenance of transitional housing. Cooking and cleaning for community events and/or elderly meals.
- Assigned seasonal duties such as shoveling of snow, gardening/yardwork and any other duties as assigned by Operations Manager and/or Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School or GED required.
- Preferred enrolled member and/or descendant of a Federally Recognized Tribe.
- Ability to be certified as a Peer Support Specialist in Oregon: o A current or former mental health services consumer; OR o A person in recovery from an addiction disorder who has abstained from alcohol and other drugs for at least 2 years; OR o A family member of a current or former recipient of addictions or mental health services.
- Has a strong desire for helping people change their lives, find hope, and build health through holistic wellness and recovery from addiction.
- Has a calm demeanor and the ability to address conflict and challenging behavior with compassion and kindness.
- Must embrace the mission and philosophy of recovery and client-centered treatment.
- Must possess a current driver’s license or working on attaining license.
- Must have the physical ability to walk, bend, stoop, twist, kneel, reach, squat, pull, and lift to 25 lbs., climb stairs several times a day, and stand for long periods of time.

- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
- Ability to effectively interact with co-workers and clients with diverse ethnic backgrounds, religious views, political affiliations, cultural backgrounds, lifestyles, and sexual orientations and treat individuals with respect and dignity.
- Excellent project and time management capabilities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, adhering and in compliance with HIPAA.
