Position Summary: The Certified Peer Support Specialist will provide 1:1 peer support to participants involved in the Walworth Alcohol Treatment Court. The Certified Peer Support Specialist will participate in OWI Treatment staffings and weekly court appearances, as requested by the Walworth OWI Treatment Team. The Peer Support Specialist is responsible for providing direct peer support, completing all required documentation, including weekly written updates to the treatment team, as well as facilitating bi-weekly recovery educational and recovery group sessions.


Essential Functions:

  • Provide 1:1 peer support services to participants in the Walworth OWI Treatment Court (including in their home and other community based locations). Peer support includes but is not limited to: linking individuals to a variety of self-determined supports and services, including housing resources, traditional mental health services, such as case management, psychiatry, and individual therapy, mutual aid support groups, natural supports, and discover other kinds of healing and/or purposeful activies that may contribute to the recovery process;
  • Meet face-to-face with all new participants to introduce the peer support services at the beginning of their involvement in the program and provide continued support throughout their involvement in the program;
  • Collaborate with local services to help establish a network of referral options for peer operated recovery residence for participants in need;
  • Make referrals to treatment and other community-based support services when appropriate;
  • Attend OWI Court Staffings and Court Sessions, as requested;
  • Document all attempted and achieved contacts in participant progress notes;
  • Provide bi-weekly written progress reports on all active participants to the OWI Treatment Court Team;
  • Provide telephone support to peers when face to face is not possible;
  • Connect participants to the Walworth Crisis Hotline when crisis services are appropriate;
  • Conduct timely and accurate data entry, as required by Walworth and WCS;
  • Ensure protection of participant confidentiality; and follow all state certified peer support standards;
  • Facilitate two 90-minute educational/recovery focused discussions (combination of virtual and/or in person at the Walworth Human Services Building) within a group setting each month;
  • Meet with the Peer Support Specialist Coordinator for supervision at a minimum of one time per week.

Job Qualifications:


Minimal Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED/HSED required. Must maintain a valid state certificate in Peer Support Services and have a minimum of 1 year experience as a peer support specialist. Valid driver’s license and insured automobile required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Maintain Peer Support State Certification
  • Knowledge of the Wisconsin Criminal Justice System and the 10 guiding principles of OWI Treatment Court
  • knowledge of local treatment programs and community resources to include housing, education, public transportation
  • knowledge of the Circuit Court Access Program (CCAP)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations
  • Sensitivity toward cultural, ethnic and disability issues
  • Good organizational, computer and typing skills
  • Good judgment and effective use of time
  • Must be trained in all WCS required Evidence Based Principals, including mandated reporter training, within 90 days of hire and follow models for fidelity established by the agency

Work Relationship and Scope:
Reports directly to the Peer Support Specialist Coordinator and interacts with the WCS Court Services Director of Court Services. Has contact with a wide variety of individuals to include criminal offenders, court officials, law enforcement, jail staff, treatment and other service providers, probation-parole staff, Walworth OWI Treatment Team members, and family members of participants.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office setting and the courtroom; involves homevisits and contact with participants in the community, as well as some virtualmeetings; the hours are 24 hours per week and must be flexible to meet theneeds of the participant.


Physical Demands: Duties require good hearing and the ability to communicate verbally;hand and finger dexterity for data entry and typing; involves driving inWaukesha and Walworth Counties.
