Job description
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Copy Editor for the Orange Media Network at Oregon State University (OSU).

The copy editor is responsible for collaborating with the editors of all OMN publications to proofread and edit all written content for print and online.
The copy editor ensures student staff members and volunteers are held to the highest ethical and professional standards and practices. The copy editor builds others up through mentoring, coaching and supporting.
The copy editor follows OMN policies and procedures while advancing Orange Media Network’s reputation for excellence as a welcoming, engaging and inclusive organization.‬‬
Onboarding: 5 hours per week, $75 total during onboarding
Full Start: Averages approximately 10 hours per week, $606 per month
NOTE : All positions and hours remain contingent on funding availability for the 2022-2023 academic year
Position Duties
Copy Editor Responsibilities
  • Proofreads, copy edits and fact checks written work intended for print and/or online publication by Orange Media Network, including The Daily Barometer, Beaver’s Digest, Prism, DAMchic, blogs, Orangemedianetwork.com, marketing and/or social media posts
  • Checks all written work for grammar, punctuation, spelling and Associated Press (AP) style
  • Works in the OMN newsroom on Sundays to edit and fact check print publication
  • Assists in covering and copyediting breaking news and sports as needed, including nights, weekends and academic breaks
  • Review contributors’ notes and make necessary accuracy checking phone calls before publication
  • Attend weekly red mark meetings with adviser to review and evaluate print publication of The Daily Barometer
  • Attends production as deemed necessary by EiC
  • Grow audience engagement
  • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
  • Ensure that you complete all OMN surveys and meet all deadlines
  • Act in a professional manner at all times and create and maintain collegial working relationships with fellow student leaders, organization members, sources, stakeholders, partners, collaborators and the community
  • Other duties as assigned by the adviser


Communication
  • Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
  • Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur.

Leadership

  • Follow all OMN policies and procedures and hold all staff and volunteers to all OMN policies and procedures
  • Be a collaborator with fellow OMN leaders in the shared use of facilities and equipment
  • Be good stewards of OMN resources by ensuring that OMN equipment is only used for OMN work
  • Alert professional staff immediately on issues with equipment

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Is knowledgeable in fact checking strategies
  • Is knowledgeable or willing to learn Associated Press (AP) Style
  • Is knowledgeable of or willing to learn SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Is knowledgeable of or willing to learn InDesign
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends
  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking
  • Is organized and reliable
  • Is comfortable giving and receiving feedback
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Is adaptable to a changing environment. Due to ongoing COVID-19 response needs, some responsibilities in this position description may need to be adjusted to comply with evolving health and safety expectations that are unknown at the time of this posting. Examples may include studio and other facility use, social distancing requirements, and the need to conduct work remotely or on-site.
