Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the nurse Manager of Surgical Services, the OR patient care tech (PCT) is responsible for maintaining the environment in the Operating Room Suites and support areas to promote maximum cleanliness both aseptically and anesthetically, including assisting in the safe transport of patients pre and post-operatively. The PCT will assist licensed staff in the operating room under the direction of the surgical registered nurse and will assist with skin preparation and positioning of patients to the Operating Room suites. The OR PCT will also be trained to float to Central Sterile Supply after completing all necessary training as needed, which will include assisting in handling of surgical supplies and instrumentation to include endoscope reprocessing.


Essential Functions:

  • Transport patients to and from the operating room area. Ensure patient safety. Reports any patient complaints. Assist nursing with transferring patients to and from the operating room bed and moving heavy equipment.
  • Assist in positioning patients for surgery. Assist with positioning and holding patient extremities during prep.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory.
  • Clean operating room suites and other restricted areas. Terminally clean OR suites as assigned daily. Cleans vertical and horizontal surfaces that collect dust. Cleans tops of windows, doorframes, TV’s, and other high places, using ladder when necessary. Dusts, cleans and polishes furniture including beds.
  • Re-stock supplies, linens and fill the blanket warmers in the sterile core as needed. Washes sinks and other plumbing fixtures and replaces supplies, such as paper-towels, soaps and toilet paper as needed. Polishes metal or other bright surfaces, cleaning glass and enamel fixtures with proper cleaning chemicals.
  • Clean stretchers and beds and replace sheets. Maintain equipment storage rooms. Perform individual daily extra assignments as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of equipment to include processing and cleaning of endoscopes with additional training.
  • Assist Physicians with the application and removal of casts after additional training.
  • Set up Jackson and Fracture tables for Orthopedic and Spinal procedures.
  • Dispose all linen and trash in the appropriate manner. Empty and replace sharps containers in all rooms.
  • Mop floors in all areas on a daily basis. Dry and wet mop floors of OR suites, other side areas, hallways and other areas as assigned.
  • Pull surgical cases as assigned.
  • Stock and maintain established par levels in all areas of surgical services to include returning surgical supplies not used in surgical cases.
  • Attend and participate in all training for central sterile supply.
  • After completion of training, may be assigned as needed to Central Sterile Supply (CSS) (see job description for CSS Technician).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, various departments and other healthcare team members.
  • Maintain knowledge of job-related duties and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to meet our custom service goals to improve overall customer satisfaction.
  • Treat and handle all patient information as confidential.

Position Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Previous clinical experience in an Operating Room environment and Endoscopy Suite desired.
  • Previous experience in Central Sterile Supply desired. Central Sterile Supply
  • Sterilization certification encouraged after one year of employment.
  • Current verification of competency in Basic Life Support (BLS)
