Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections (DOC) is looking for a detail-oriented person to serve as a working supervisor to direct and assist with the daily operations for Stateville Correctional Center and Stateville’s Reception & Classification Center mailroom. We are looking for an energetic, highly motivated candidate who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment processing substantial quantities of incoming and outgoing mail for the facility. Confidentiality is essential as this position handles mail from departmental staff, attorneys, individuals in custody, and the general public.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as working supervisor.
  • Monitors and assists with the processing of legal and privileged mail.
  • Answers inquiries from individuals in custody, family and friends regarding mail policies and procedures.
  • Directs and assists with the routing of mail by computer.
  • Confers with Publication Review Committee Chairperson and property control officer regarding publications received for individuals in custody.
  • Keyboards a variety of correspondence, reports, or other information from handwritten hard copy.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of study at a secretarial/business college and one (1) year of office experience

OR Completion of high school and three (3) years of Office Assistant experience

OR Three (3) years of independent business experience.

2. Requires ability to keyboard accurately at 30 words per minute.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

1. Prefers at least four (4) years of supervisory experience in an office setting.
2. Prefers at least two (2) years of work experience utilizing Microsoft Office or an equivalent computer software program.
3. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working in a correctional setting.
4. Prefers at least two (2) years of office experience keeping detailed logbooks.
5. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience preparing reports in a workplace setting.
6. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working in a confidential setting.
