Job description

The nurse practitioner hired for this position will be expected to provide high quality, evidence-based primary health care to University of Virginia students in compliance with the medical staff bylaws of the Department of Student Health and Wellness. Excellent clinical and interpersonal skills are required. Patient care activities may include supervision and instruction of UVA School of Nursing students and other trainees as they participate in clinical rotations in Medical Services. This will include one-on-one teaching, oversight of patient care, and providing feedback.
In carrying out these duties, nurse practitioners will adhere to the Medical Staff Bylaws of the Department of Student Health and Wellness. Nurse practitioners are responsible for ongoing professional development.
Nurse practitioners may be required to perform other duties as assigned and may be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Providing the full spectrum of health care services to include health promotion, disease prevention, health protection, anticipatory guidance, counseling, and disease management.
- Assessing, diagnosing, and treating minor illnesses, and managing chronic health problems.
- Assessing and evaluating vague or ill-defined symptoms in adolescents and adults.
- Developing a plan of care based on assessment, which includes prescribing appropriate medications and treatments, providing follow-up care, and evaluating effectiveness of care.
- Analyzing the multiple effects of pharmacologic agents, including over-the-counter preparations.
- Diagnosing commonly occurring acute and chronic, multi-symptom health problems.
- Promoting self-care by adolescent and adult patients.
We seek individuals who are collaborative in nature, have effective communication skills, practice good self-care, maintain healthy boundaries, and can manage a busy workload while promoting a positive relational and organizational atmosphere. This is an in-person position.

Requirements include:
1) Graduate degree in nursing as an Advanced Practice Nurse
2) Virginia Nurse Practitioner license by time of hire
3) Virginia Prescriptive authority by time of hire
4) DEA license or DEA license eligible
5) Certification as a women’s health nurse practitioner, family nurse practitioner, or pediatric nurse practitioner
6) Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
Preferred qualifications:
1) Experience in college health and/or adolescent medicine
2) Experience in women’s health.
3) At least 3 years practicing in clinical medicine as a nurse practitioner.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
