Job Summary:
Oversee and direct nursing staff in collaboration with the Director of Nursing to provide quality nursing services to all residential clients while they are in treatment at the agency and to ensure them an appropriate continuum of care when they leave the agency.
Job Specific Responsibilities and Duties:
Direct and provide supervision to nursing staff at Paterson and Secaucus (Medical and Detox Unit) in collaboration with Director of Nursing (DON)
Ensure quality nursing services to all residential clients including programs in Paterson and Secaucus
Prepares Monthly staff schedules a month in advance and ensures 24/7 Nursing coverage in collaboration with DON.
Provide on-call emergency response to nursing staff and residential Program Directors 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week either directly or through a designated, qualified nursing staff member.
Provide Nursing coverage (call outs/PTO,etc)
May be designated Charge Nurse for a shift, with oversight of LPNs or nursing assistants and other medical personnel.
Assures quality of care by developing and interpreting nursing philosophies and standards of care; enforcing adherence to state board of nursing and state nurse practice act requirements and to other governing agency regulations; measuring health outcomes against standards; making or recommending adjustments.
Develop and implement written objectives, standards of practice, and organizational plan for nursing services in coordination with the Director of Nursing (DON) and the Medical Director (MD)
Develop, implement and revises policies and procedures for nursing services.
Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures and maintains nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel SN policies and procedures Notify staff as new policies are developed.
Coordinate and integrate nursing services with other patient care services both within the agency and in the community.
Recruit, interview and hire all nursing and ancillary medical personnel in coordination with the Director of Nursing (DON) and the Medical Director (MD) and Human Resources Department.
Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff. Orients all new nursing and ancillary medical personnel to the facility and their job responsibilities.
Provide regularly scheduled training to nursing personnel on areas of care associated with this patient population as well as new regulations.
Formally evaluate all newly hired nursing and ancillary medical personnel in collaboration with DON
Formally evaluate all medical and ancillary medical personnel annually during the specified evaluation period and submit to Human Resources.
Develop written job descriptions in collaboration with DON and MD for nursing and ancillary personnel and update annually at the time of the employee’s Performance Evaluation.
Ensure supervisees keep employee files up to date according to Human Resource’s policies and procedures.
Document any medical staff transgressions as they occur in accordance with Catholic Charities-Straight & Narrow’s procedure for employee warnings and participate in effecting any terminations that may be warranted in collaboration with Human Resources.
Maintains nursing staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, support to staff, patients, friends, and families.
Maintains a cooperative relationship among staff by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
Ensure representation of appropriate nursing personnel at Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDT) meetings and all other staff meetings where nursing representation is required.
Ensure that all standards for health including Division of Mental Health Addiction (DMHAS) and CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), life safety; infection control; medication storage, dispensing and disposal, etc. are met.
Prepare and implement those areas of Medical/Detox and Primary Care Plans of Correction that have to do with nursing services including, but not limited to, medication dispensing and monitoring; medication storage; infection control; nursing documentation.
Ensure that credentials of nursing are verified annually, and that documentation of this verification is in each employee’s Personnel file.
Protects patients and employees by developing and interpreting infection-control policies and protocols, enforcing medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
Ensure that client retention by providing efficient nursing care to clients on Detox as well as residential units.
Renew written agreements with pharmacy, Lab and any other outside agencies (as needed) to which Straight & Narrow refers, annually in collaboration with DON.
Ensure that the pharmacy visits the agency to monitor medications monthly.
Ensure that all clients’ prescriptions are ordered as required and any generic medications or medical supplies are always in stock.
Ensure medication sheets are evaluated monthly and oversee the quality assurance of all nursing charts and services.
Follow up on complaints regarding medication or nursing services lodged by clients, families, referral sources and staff members.
Ensure staff RN or LPN represents Medical Unit at the weekly Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDT) as required.
Chair Medical Committee and participate in any other CQI meetings to which assigned.
Review patient/client charts weekly to ensure regulatory compliance and appropriate patient care in collaboration with DON.
Facilitate weekly Medical Unit staff meetings.
Responsible for reviewing medical charts of patients with co-morbidities prior to acceptance for admission.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; currently licensed as an RN in the state of New Jersey; strong management and interpersonal skills; Masters’ Degree with three years’ experience with substance abuse and psychiatric patients or bachelor’s degree with four years' experience with substance abuse and/or psychiatric patients.
