Job Overview
Performs mosquito surveillance tasks and field inspection work, including spraying, in the control and extermination of mosquitoes, undesirable arthropods and noxious weeds.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The Hillsborough County Public Works Department is seeking Mosquito Control Inspector II to collect blood samples from sentinel chicken flocks, sort, count, and identify mosquito samples, perform m osquito property inspections, helicopter loading, surveillance tasks, field inspections, and pesticide spraying to control and exterminate mosquitoes, undesirable arthropods and noxious weeds in Hillsborough County. The ideal candidate be willing to gain knowledge of mosquito breeding habitats and adult and larvae specimen identification, control and extermination methods, materials, and equipment and larvicidal and adulticiding equipment. Candidate must have the ability to work alongside busy roadways, in swamplands, in brushy areas performing manual labor in outside environment, exposed to heat, sun, high humidity, rain and other adverse weather conditions . Candidate must have the ability to work weekends and nights when needed. The job also requires frequent fine manipulations, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasional bending, crawling, climbing and stooping. Candidate will be required to obtain a Public Health Spray License and an Aquatic Spray License within six months of being hired.

Min; $33,737.60 annually
Mid: $42,848.00 annually

Duties and Responsibilities

- Performs tasks associated with the mosquito surveillance program, which includes operation of the sentinel chicken sites and counting and identification of mosquitoes in CDC traps.
- Coordinates the work of seasonal inspectors engaged in controlling mosquitoes in urban and rural areas of the county, locating breeding areas, and identifying larvae specimens.
- Participates in the inspection of mosquito breeding marsh areas to determine its extent and density.
- Investigates mosquito annoyance complaints; plans control measures, offers solutions, communicates effectively with residents and prepares an inspection report
- Inspects business and residential premises, tire yards, and dairies for mosquito and other arthropods.
- Identifies arthropod specimens, both adult and larval.
- Participates in surveys conducted to determine the most satisfactory and economical method for controlling and exterminating arthropod breeding habitats.
- Conducts surveys and inspections in coordination with staff of other governmental agencies government concerning mosquito habitats of medical importance.
- Assists in calibrating spray equipment and in the analysis of findings.
- Mixes insecticides and herbicides to apply on mosquito and weed infested areas.
- Loads pesticides into the spray tank and cleans fogging and larvicidal machines or other equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Job Specifications
- Knowledge of mosquito breeding habitats, adult and larvae specimen’s identification, and control and extermination methods, materials, and equipment.
- Knowledge of larvicidal and adulticide equipment.
- Skill in the operation, calibration, and maintenance of spray equipment.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to prepare written activity reports.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read maps.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Position may require extensive bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting.
- Willingness and ability to be routinely and frequently around chemicals including pesticides and herbicides.
Work Category
- Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
- Three (3) years of experience providing pest control services using herbicide or insecticide; including one year as a lead worker/supervisor;
- OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License; AND
- Current State of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Applicator License in Aquatic Pest Control and a current State of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control Certification.
Emergency Management Responsibilities
In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
