Orchard Laboratories is a clinical lab in West Bloomfield, MI specializing in molecular diagnostic testing, microbiology testing, confirmatory urine and oral fluid drug testing, as well as routine/complex chemical, hematologic, microscopic, morphologic immunologic, and/or microbiologic blood testing. We are seeking a dynamic Molecular Lab Technician to perform specimen preparation and testing on our real-time PCR and antimicrobial susceptibility instrumentation. This position requires handling clinical samples, performing routine molecular biology techniques, and mastering proficiency with multiple instruments. We are looking to fill a dayshift 6:00A to 4:00P), four 10-hour shifts, with a weekend availability of at least 1 full weekend per month.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or a related field. Preferred candidates will have previous professional laboratory experience, more specifically clinical RT-PCR experience, RNA/DNA extraction experience, or clinical microbiology experience. Must be highly motivated and detail-oriented, demonstrate effective time-management skills, as well as have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities:

• Follow CLIA, CAP, and OSHA safety guidelines as stipulated in their documents.
• Adhere to HIPAA regulations concerning the confidentiality of patient information.
• Sort, process, and aliquot patient samples following laboratory protocols. Sample types include, but are not limited to, urine, oral fluid swabs, blood, nasopharyngeal swabs, genital swabs, and fecal swabs.
• Become familiar with the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and enter patient demographics and test results without errors.
• Prepare reagents, quality controls, and internal standards.
• Assist with monitoring inventory of all necessary lab reagents/supplies, coordinate placing orders as needed, and ensure proper documentation and testing of new lots of reagents (if required).
• Perform DNA/RNA extractions for various molecular panels, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) from clinical samples on a Quant Studio® platform.
• Perform Culturing, Gram Staining, Organism Identification, and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing on a Sensititre® platform.
• Maintain, operate and trouble-shoot RT-PCR and Antimicrobial Susceptibility testing instrumentation with minimal supervision.
• Be proficient in analyzing molecular/microbiological data using various data analysis software (i.e., Design and Analysis), documenting results, and following laboratory’s directives for reporting and maintaining complete and accurate test records.
• Assist in the validation of new molecular and microbiology tests and instrumentation.
• Work well as a team with other laboratory staff and management.
• Inform supervisors/managers of improper lab practices or errors.
• Assist in the sendout process periodically.
• Perform any additional duties required of this position as new methods and procedures are developed.

Education:

· Bachelor’s Degree in medical technology, biological or clinical laboratory science or a related field (such as, molecular biology, biochemistry)

· Minimum one (1) years of experience in a clinical or molecular diagnostics laboratory performing testing procedures and techniques
