Position Focus

Under limited supervision, performs carpentry work at the journeyman level by applying skills unique to the trade to make, assemble or repair case work, molding, trim and other products made of wood or related building materials. Facilities Millworker must have knowledge of materials and methods, as well as a working knowledge of a variety of stationary woodworking machines and tools.

The incumbent ensures that wood products are constructed in accordance with prepared designs and drawings as specified by the department.

Essential Duties

1. Performs assignments under limited Supervision. Works closely with Trades Mechanics and receives assignments from both the Supervisor and Trade Mechanics. 2. Makes, assembles or repairs case work, molding, trim and other products made of wood or related building materials. 3. Ensures wood products are constructed in accordance with prepared designs and drawings as specified by the department. 4. Provides assistance in preparing drawings to visualize a piece of equipment or woodwork that needs to be custom made. 5. Operates multiple millwork machines such as shapers, table saws, mortise & ten non machine and planers. 6. Reads blueprints and develops material list. 7. Lays out dimensions on parts, paper, or lumber stock in accordance with the blueprint or drawing specifications if available. 8. Identifies tools and materials that will be needed to complete each job. 9. Trims components and joints to fit snugly using various hand tools. 10. Glues, clamps and fits sub assemblies to form finished units. Sands, scrapes, and preps surfaces for finishes. 11. Installs hardware such as hinges, latches, drawer pulls and various hardware components. 12. Possesses advanced knowledge of wood jointing techniques and methods and exhibits the ability to apply this knowledge in situations where detailed design documents are not available. 13. Operates equipment safely and follows OSHA guidelines and all departmental and University• wide safety guidelines at all times. 14. Performs preventative maintenance on machinery. 15. Performs other carpentry assignments and related duties as required.

Required Education and Experience

1. High School Graduate or equivalent, and successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry and two years previous woodworking shop experience or six years professional carpentry millwork experience required. 2. In-depth knowledge of and experience in the standard practices, methods, tools, equipment, materials and safety of the trade. Knows the qualities of various woods.

Ability to work from blueprints or sketches and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to utilize appropriate math skills.

Demonstrated, consistent and reliable job performance in an equivalent position.

Required Licenses or Certifications

OSHA 10 certified as of date of hire. Must have Driver's license valid in the State of Connecticut.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent bending, stooping, kneeling and lifting. Must be capable of lifting and moving material up to 80 pounds.
