Description of Position:

This is an hourly 8 hour per day position working between the hours of 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday through Friday. Overtime may be needed during our busy season (3-5 hours/week). A variable amount of time is needed on Saturday to read Friday’s test results (usually a 10 minutes read and 2 hours overtime paid as compensation). The incumbent will be on call all weekend, 1 weekend per month.

Job Summary:

The person in this position performs bacteriological testing and some general chemistry of drinking water and environmental samples under the direction of the lab manager. The person in this position will also be required to contact clients with the results of testing and reporting results to the state Department of Health when necessary (Acute failures on weekend duty). The employee will be required to read and comply with the provisions listed in the company Safety Manual, the Employee Handbook, and the Laboratory Quality Assurance Manual. The employee is expected to adhere to all Good Laboratory Practices.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Timely and accurate processing of samples to be tested for bacteriological contamination and nitrate determination. This position is also responsible for reporting the results from the specific test procedures utilized.
  • Preparing and maintaining adequate stocks of reagents, dilution water and media for the tests assigned.
  • Keeping accurate and complete records as detailed in the laboratory policy and procedures manual.
  • Maintaining all instrumentation assigned to them.
  • Restocking consumable supplies, washing laboratory glassware as needed and performing housekeeping duties of their assigned areas.
  • Prepares samples for analysis and performs analysis by approved analytical methodology for wet chemistry in drinking water, non-potable water, soils, solids/semi-solids, and biosolids.
  • Accurate and timely analysis of water and solid samples utilizing approved methodology.
  • Accurate and timely analysis of agricultural soil samples for physical and nutritional parameters.
  • Back up duties for the inorganic general chemistry section when necessary.
  • Other duties as may from time to time be assigned

Duties and Tasks:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Preparation of A-1 media for fecal coliform determinations by multiple tube methods. (Includes autoclaving prepared media)
  • Prepare media for HPC determinations.
  • Dispose of and autoclave bacteria samples.
  • Prepare all paperwork and bench-sheets.
  • Determine fecal coliform by membrane filtration.
  • Determine Enterococcus, E. coli and Total Coliform by Quanti-Tray procedure.
  • Determine Heterotrophic plate counts on water samples.
  • Inventory and order consumable supplies as needed.
  • Perform bacteriological determinations on Proficiency Testing samples.
  • Review and revise laboratory SOPs annually.
  • Review and revise microbiological laboratory QA manual annually.
  • Perform BART determinations for Iron bacteria and Sulfur reducing bacteria.
  • Maintaining microbiology lab QC records.
  • Perform routine drinking water testing for coliform bacteria.
  • Contact clients with results.
  • Perform sample leaching or digestion of samples by approved methods.
  • Prepares standards and reagents.
  • Uses computer software to reduce, analyze and report data.
  • Disposes of laboratory waste according to waste disposal program procedures.
  • Submits purchase requests for supplies used in this area.
  • General housekeeping of assigned work area.
  • Other duties as may from time to time be assigned.

Education and Experience Required: Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required. Experience in a microbiology, chemistry, or general lab setting is a plus. Pay will be determined based on education and experience.

Working Conditions:

  • There may be exposure to toxic chemicals and/or infectious materials daily (chemical reagents and wastewater fecal samples).
  • There are times when work will be conducted on hot surfaces and with hot liquids.
  • Acids are used routinely in the performance of the duties for this position.
  • Personal Protective Equipment is required to be worn when performing the duties of this position.

Physical Demands:

This position requires standing for extended periods of time and some lifting (May be required to lift coolers weighing 50 lbs. or less).
Organizational

Relationships:

This position works under the direction of the Lead Analyst. This position reports directly to the Laboratory Manager.

This position interacts with other analysts in the laboratory and sample custodian.

Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
