Position Summary:


Performs administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of physician. The duties of Medical Assistants vary from office to office, depending on size of practice, physician specialty and physician preference. Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting with patient care. Medical Assistants report to the Clinic Manager and Physician.


Position Designation:


The position of Medical Assistant is identified as “department safety-sensitive”.


Department safety-sensitive positions means employment positions which may in the normal course of business:


  • Require the employee to operate the company vehicles or heavy equipment; and/or
  • Involves duties which, if performed with inattentiveness, errors in judgment, or diminished coordination, dexterity, or composure, may result in mistakes that could present a real and/or imminent threat to the personal health and safety of the employee, co-worker, and/or the public.


Delegation of Authority:


As a Medical Assistant you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.


Duties and Responsibilities:


1. Greets and escorts patients to exam/procedure rooms.

2. Takes and records vital signs and medical histories in accurate & precise manner.

3. Assists patient in completing paperwork, insurance forms, consent forms, etc.

4. Explains treatment procedures to patients, prepares patients for examinations, assists physician during exams/procedures. May relay instructions to patients/families. All of the above as directed by physician.

5. May perform minor procedures (suture removal, dressing changes, wound care) as directed and deemed competent by physician.

6. May collect and prepare laboratory specimens.

7. Appropriately disposes of contaminated supplies, according to Infection Control policies/procedures.

8. Accurately charts in patients medical record. Maintains accurate and organized records of patient visits, treatment, testing reports, etc. Manages charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.

9. May prepare and administer medications/injections as directed by physician.

10. Authorize prescription drug refills as directed by physician. Telephone or fax prescriptions to pharmacy. PHYSICIAN MUST DESIGNATE SPECIFIC AUTHORITY TO MEDICAL ASSISTANT TO PHONE IN PRESCRIPTIONS AND RE-FILLS.

11. Arrange for hospital admissions or laboratory, radiological procedures, or other testing.

12. Obtains lab/radiology/other reports while maintaining these in a file until seen and initialed by physician. Reports critical values immediately to physician.

13. Obtain pre-authorizations as required for out patient services and office procedures.

14. Assists with patient referrals and follow up as directed by physician. Screens phone calls from patients, returns messages, and provides pertinent information as directed by physician.

15. Must cross-train to learn receptionist duties such as answering phones, greeting patients, patient referrals, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and billing procedures.

16. May arrange exam room instruments and equipment. Order and maintain supplies and equipment as directed by physician.

17. Clean exam rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits per Infection Control policies/procedures.

18. Demonstrates skill and accuracy in hospital computer application.

19. Maintains harmonious relationship within the office and with co-workers providing support and assistance to ensure quality patient care.

20. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients, their families and other staff members.

21. Maintains confidentiality of all patient/resident/staff information.

22. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.


Position Qualification:


Preferred Minimum Education:


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Medical terminology
  • Medical Assistant Certification or previous medical assistant training or experience.
  • CPR Certification


Personal Qualifications:


  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Ability to type/knowledge of computers
  • Ability to make independent decisions
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, general public
  • Previous clerical experience


Physical Requirements:

  • Light to moderate physical effort (lift, carry, push, pull up to 30 lbs.)
  • Manual dexterity and mobility
  • Much walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting and standing

Required Protective Equipment:


Gown, medical gloves, face shield as necessary and other equipment as required by OSHA regulations and hospital policy.
