Medical Assistant Job Description

Job Summary:

Responsible for assisting with all medical assistant back-office duties Works under the direction and supervision of the physician, mid-level provider and patient. Maintaining supplies, vaccines, and a safe clean environment.

Job Duties:

Medical Assistants are responsible for knowing their scope of practice.

  • Prepare eMR Charts for visits with providers.
  • Receives patients, takes, and records chief complaints, and prepares patients for examination, accurate vital signs, vision testing, audiology, medication reconciliation, and medical history intake.
  • Reviews patient’s record forms for accuracy and completion.
  • Prepares patients for examinations or procedures, setting up trays for procedures such as pap smears and cultures.
  • Transmitting requisitions to the correct lab, specimen, and lab collection such as hemoglobin, RBS, UA dip sticks, UA culture, and pregnancy tests may be ordered by providers.
  • Knowledge of vaccinations, confirming prior to preparation, administration, and record keeping.
  • EKG
  • Administers medications intramuscularly, intradermally as ordered by a provider.
  • Prepares and replenishes supplies in the treatment room and exam rooms; maintains exam rooms in an orderly and constant state of readiness.
  • Sterilization of instruments and maintenance of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
  • Proper disposal of contaminated, and outdated items per OSHA


Demonstrates willingness to assist co-workers whenever needed. Maintains good working relationships with all clinic personnel and patients.

  • Performs other duties as needed.
  • Responsible for having a current CPR card.
  • Requires attending and participation in all staff meetings.
  • Comply with Central City Community Health Center employee handbook, policies, and procedures • This does not limit clinical activities. MAs will work according to the Job description and scope of practice.
  • Provides compassionate quality care to the patients of Central City within the scope of practice outlined by HIPPA, state, and or federal law.
  • Consistently demonstrate and uphold CCCHC’s principle of providing quality health and human services to medically underserved and low-income populations in a culturally sensitive manner.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Attributes:

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of VFC, VFA, CHDP, Family PACT, and Sliding Fee Schedule guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to plan and be organized.
  • Ability to take initiative and be flexible and cooperative.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information and company records.
  • Ability to exhibit good interpersonal skills.
  • All other duties as assigned and or instructed.
  • Ability to convey a positive and professional image to the public.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in various PC applications, including E-mail, Internet, and networking devices.
  • Required to know, follow, and enforce safe work practices, and be aware of company policies and procedures related to job safety, including safety rules and regulations.
  • Understand HIPPA and OSHA regulations and privacy practices.
  • Dependable transportation, automobile insurance, and a current CA Driver’s License.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Medical Assistant Certificate
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish

Working Conditions:

  • Normal clinic environment:
  • Occasional walking, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Effectively act as a liaison between patients and providers
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks while also being tactful, diplomatic, and empathetic.
  • Ability to organize and schedule work effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with managers, providers and other levels of personnel, and patients, in person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain composure under conditions of urgency, and work well under pressure, and/or time constraints.
  • Ability to handle and maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA regulations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.61 - $22.31 per hour
