Job description
The overall goal of this VISTA project is to increase food access to low-income adults 55+ by developing a coalition of stakeholders in healthcare and public assistance programs to implement the Montana Food Bank Network’s Senior Hunger strategic plan. The most recent data from America’s Health Rankings indicates that over 9% of seniors age 60+ are at risk of food insecurity. Sixty-seven percent of seniors eligible for SNAP are not enrolled to receive assistance. Thirty percent of Montana’s seniors are living alone and 26% have incomes of less than $20,000 putting them at extreme high risk for food insecurity. In most cases, seniors face tough decisions between paying for medications, utilities, and rent/mortgage or food. In addition, many are unaware of the programs and services available to them or feel that they are not eligible. Older adults with food insecurity may have significantly reduced intakes of vital nutrients, which could adversely affect overall health. This VISTA project will bring together a coalition of healthcare providers and senior services stakeholders to implement a plan to strategically address senior hunger through education and outreach. This VISTA project will move low-income adults 55+ out of poverty by improving access to affordable, healthy food, resulting in overall improvement in their mental and physical health outcomes. Located in Missoula, MT.
