Job description

Help write the next chapter of public education in America! In the 2023-24 school year, Prospect Hill Academy will be launching a Middle School program centered on student engagement and equity in concert with educator sustainability. We are seeking educators who are excited to be part of a small team of passionate teachers and experienced leaders to co-construct a model of school that prioritizes, believes in, and elevates the possibility and potential of young people. Central to this model will be project-based learning, community and student-centered curricula, and a culture of care and belonging. Your voice, ideas, and unique identity and experience will be critical in shaping this better way to do school for young people.

Who Are We?
Prospect Hill Academy Charter School is a highly successful urban PK-12 public school located in Somerville and Cambridge. We enroll over 1,000 students from cities and towns throughout the greater Boston metro area. Our inclusive and restorative school celebrates and serves a diverse community - with 87% BIPOC, 27% ELL, and 16% of our students qualifying for special education services. Our mission is to prepare all students for success in college, foster responsible citizenship, and inspire a lifelong love of learning - as we believe academic achievement opens doors and creates opportunities for our students.

We center the values of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion in our work. Our approach to instruction is founded on culturally sustaining, inquiry-based, and student-centered practices. To invest in the growth of our educators, we offer comprehensive professional development, instructional coaching, and mentorship. Our campuses foster a collaborative team environment with extraordinary educators who are committed to ongoing learning, reflection, and professional growth.

What does a STEM/Math teacher at Prospect Hill do?
As a Math teacher at PHA Middle School, your focus will be to support students in making mathematical thinking, logic, and problem-solving valuable and meaningful parts of their identities and lives. A passion for applying mathematical thinking to real-world dilemmas and contexts is critical to success in this role. As important, you will need to draw on and be committed to developing the following skills:

  • Development of interdisciplinary projects and curricula that connect mathematical learning and problem-solving with students’ lives and communities
  • Implementing constructivist mathematics instruction that prioritizes student exploration, discovery, sense-making, and problem-solving, in order to develop independent and collaborative math learners
  • Differentiating instruction to make math accessible and challenging for all learners
  • Examining and challenging personal biases and systemic inequities in pursuit of anti-racist teaching, curricula, and culture

Most important to a candidate for this role is an eagerness and excitement to unlearn the models and mindsets of traditional schooling and collaboratively embrace developing a new model for school that centers and uplifts students’ whole selves.

In addition, as a Math teacher, you will be responsible for core teaching principles including curriculum and planning, the classroom environment, instruction, student assessment and professional responsibilities.

What Knowledge, Skills, and Experiences are needed for this role?

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred
  • MA Licensure in relevant field preferred, or working towards completion of licensure
  • Understanding and familiarity with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
  • Commitment to Prospect Hill Academy’s educational mission and values
  • Commitment to and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds with diverse profiles
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with a dedicated staff and involved parent body
