The Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL) is a core facility overseen by the Institute. The 52,000 square-foot regional biocontainment laboratory (RBL) was established in 2010 as one of 12 NIAID-funded RBLs to support infectious disease research and foster collaborations with other national and global laboratories. It operates as a central core facility to advance research and develop novel diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines against viral and bacterial infectious agents by a diverse population of internal and external investigators. The facility is capable of housing multiple species and has a variety of established animal models, with an emphasis on aerosolized exposures. The BRL is fully approved and licensed for work by the CDC and USDA and is accredited by AAALAC.

The Laboratory Technologist II will provide technical research support at the BRL by:
- Assisting principal investigators with in vitro and in vivo BSL2 and BSL3 research experiments in the fields of virology and microbiology;
- Serving as the subject matter expert on the Organ-on-a-chip and Organoid models and will conduct studies utilizing the core capabilities of the center;
- Providing training and assistance to other GMU researchers and students on the use of various advanced instruments and equipment;
- Ensuring lab spaces are well maintained, organized, and in compliance with all EHS requirements;
- Accurately recording data, and generating reports on experimentation, data analysis, and methodology for possible publications or grant applications; and
- Providing guidance to the research technicians.
Weekend and Holiday work may be required, as well as extra hours for project-related activities.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Scientific, Engineering, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge of following established SOPs and conducting bacteriology and/or virology studies;
- 3 years of experience performing and designing research experiments;
- 2 years of experience with cell culture, virology and molecular and biochemical techniques such as cell-based assays, Western blotting, flow cytometry, viral infections, and PCR;
- Experience with organoid and organ-on-a-chip techniques; and
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and other computer software for data capture.
Applicants must have the ability to:
- Complete experiments in a timely, consistent, and professional manner;
- Be willing and able to gain BSL3 access and work with select agents; and
- Successfully enroll in Select Agent Program and complete mentorship within one year.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Scientific, Engineering, or a related field;
- Experience at an institution of Higher Education;
- Ability to troubleshoot and develop new SOPs; and
- Previous experience with small animal models or willingness to work with animals.
