The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services has a full time vacancy for Laboratory Scientist Trainee-III.
SUMMARY:
LABORATORY SCIENTIST TRAINEE
Performs a variety of bacteriological, chemical, immunological, virological and serological laboratory tests on clinical samples to assist in the diagnosis of human illness.
LABORATORY SCIENTIST I
Performs a variety of bacteriological, chemical, immunological, virological and serological laboratory tests on clinical samples to assist in the diagnosis of human illness.
LABORATORY SCIENTIST II
Performs and interprets skilled professional laboratory analysis of clinical and environmental specimens as well as researching and developing new test methods and procedures to accurately and efficiently generate laboratory data to technical, and healthcare professionals.
LABORATORY SCIENTIST III
Performs and interprets skilled professional laboratory analysis of clinical and environmental specimens as well as researching and developing new test methods and procedures to accurately and efficiently generate laboratory data to legal, technical, and healthcare professionals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
LABORATORY SCIENTIST TRAINEE
Participates in training to examine human biological specimens including blood, body fluids, and excretions to detect specific disease agents or toxins and/or immunity to these agents.
Participates in training to perform biochemical, serological and susceptibility testing procedures for the identification, and serotyping of bacterial organisms, including testing for highly hazardous microbiological organisms and toxins as found on the Centers for Disease Control’s select agent list.
Receives and logs in patient specimens, records insufficiencies which may affect the validity of the test result. Prepares specimens, equipment, reagents, and supplies for examination. Disposes of hazardous waste and decontaminates work surfaces and equipment.
Records and reports confidential test results by phone and written report. Maintains effective working relationship with health care providers and state agencies by describing procedures, policies, and courses of action to obtain the most reliable test specimen and to avoid compromising patient’s health.
Communicates with supervisor concerning significant or unusual findings, supply needs, and equipment malfunction to maintain quality and efficiency of the unit’s performance to achieve agency objectives. Recommends to the supervisor possible modifications in procedures to make them more cost and time efficient.
Performs preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment; maintains and documents quality control records to assure proper operating conditions; checks media and reagents and documents results; keeps a daily log of all controls, including room and equipment temperatures; participates in a proficiency testing program to assure technical skill.
LABORATORY SCIENTIST I

Trains new laboratory employees and other employees in the proper use of equipment and implementation of established procedures to ensure expensive instrumentation is used correctly and detailed procedures are followed precisely. Reviews these employees’ work for accuracy.
LABORATORY SCIENTIST II
Analyzes, reports, and interprets laboratory testing data from a wide range of sources, to identify, confirm, and quantitate biological components (organisms, toxins, chemicals, foreign substances) in clinical, or environmental samples including testing for highly hazardous microbiological organisms found on the Centers for disease control’s select agent list. This level is required to do Rabies testing independently.
Trains new employees, subordinates, and non-technical professionals in the proper use of equipment and new policies and procedures, to achieve goals in a specialized field. Oversees the work in the absence of the supervisor.
Communicates with medical, and environmental professionals including physicians, nurses, health care workers, lawyers and representatives of outside agencies regarding notification and interpretation of laboratory test results and methodologies.
Maintains laboratory equipment and instruments and troubleshoots instrumentation problems to insure proper and safe operation. Monitors lab procedures and methods with detailed record keeping to assure quality control.
Actively participates in proficiency testing to document compliance and competency in performing analyses.
Independently conducts assigned projects, researches new test methods, and compiles and analyzes data to provide informational reports for implementation or revision of unit policies and procedures.
Chairs and/or serves on existing lab committees to update health care providers on public health laboratory policy; recommends and maintains safety policies; and provides information and educational programs for employees and area technical professionals.
LABORATORY SCIENTIST III
Assists the unit supervisor in the daily operations of a laboratory unit. Acts as supervisor of the unit in the absence of the supervisor.
Analyzes, reports, and interprets laboratory testing data from a wide range of sources, to identify, confirm, and quantitate biological components (organisms, toxins, chemicals, foreign substances) in clinical, or environmental samples. Participates in the laboratory response to microbiological incidents and intentional exposures, including testing for highly hazardous microbiological organisms and toxins as found on the Centers for Disease Control’s select agent list.
Trains, directs, and oversees new employees, subordinates, and non-technical professionals in the proper use of equipment and new policies and procedures, to achieve goals in specialized field. Oversees the work unit in the absence of the supervisor.
Communicates with medical, and environmental professionals including physicians, nurses, health care workers, and representatives of outside agencies regarding notification and interpretation of laboratory test results and methodologies.
Maintains laboratory equipment and instruments and troubleshoots instrumentation problems to insure proper and safe operation. Rewrites and keeps current all laboratory procedures, and monitors and maintains records including statistical data, PM, QC, and daily work logs.
Successfully participates in proficiency testing to document compliance and competency in performing analyses.
Evaluates current methodologies, independently conducts assigned projects, and compiles and analyzes data to provide informational reports for implementation or revision of unit policies and procedures.
Chairs and/or serves on existing laboratory committees to update health care providers and other agencies on public health policies; recommends and maintains safety policies; and provides informational and educational programs for employees and other technical professionals.

License/Certification: Applicants must meet certification requirements of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for Clinical Laboratory Personnel (CLIA ’88).
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Visual deficiencies must not interfere with ability to perform laboratory analyses. Physical condition must allow for the administration of vaccines and necessary diagnostic tests. Superior manual dexterity and coordination is required. Must be willing and able to handle unpleasant specimens such as blood, feces, sputum, vomitus, animal heads, and samples known to contain infectious organisms and toxic chemicals. Must be willing to receive Rabies and Hepatitis B vaccine. Must be willing to undergo FBI security risk assessment for access to select microbiological agents as per Federal regulations.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience must be in the specialty of microbiology. Visual deficiencies must not interfere with ability to perform laboratory analyses. Physical condition must allow for the administration of vaccines and necessary diagnostics tests. Superior manual dexterity and coordination required. Must be willing and able to handle unpleasant specimens such as blood, feces, sputum, vomitus, animal heads, and samples known to contain infectious organisms and toxic chemicals. Must be willing to receive Rabies and Hepatitis B vaccine. Must be willing to undergo FBI security risk assessment for access to select microbiological agents as per Federal regulations.
