Job Description Summary
Los Angeles Times Studios is looking for an executive producer for special initiatives. This leader will work directly with the executive teams from the newsroom, L.A. Times Studios and The Times’ business side to launch an ambitious, first-of-its-kind project that spotlights the individuals who are pulling the levers of power and influence and shaping Los Angeles’ present and future.
Job Description
We are interested in hearing from creative, highly organized managers who have impeccable journalistic credentials, a track record of multimedia innovation and an ability to foster excellent communication with newsroom and sales and marketing staff alike.

Job Description

The Los Angeles Times has ambitions to launch, in 2023, a major initiative that spotlights the individuals who are shaping the future of Los Angeles, for better or worse, across the cultural spaces covered by the West Coast’s leading media company: politics, tech, sports, art, entertainment, science, education and more.

This initiative will comprise storytelling across platforms: muscular profile writing, long- and short-form video, podcasts and events that bring these leading voices and faces to Times readers, viewers and consumers. The group will be selected by The Times’ newsroom.

The executive producer will be charged with helping set the strategy of this new franchise, establishing and overseeing its projected yearlong timetable and coordinating messaging, assignments and delivery of assets with Times’ department heads. They will also be the chief conduit with the business side to articulate to clients and outside media the project’s ambition and execution.

Responsibilities:
  • Set the timetable for planning and execution of the new franchise, including internal and external messaging about the aims and progress of the initiative, key dates and deadlines, and ownership of roles
  • Work with newsroom leadership to create an organizational chart of key newsroom stakeholders and owners, especially department heads who will lead the conversation around the development of the franchise and various storytelling formats
  • Work with leadership to identify and collaborate with platform owners, including digital, print, video, audio, events and communications
  • Work with sales and marketing leadership to establish channels of communication that enable The Times to go out to market with a clear explanation of the project’s goals and deliverables; may occasionally be asked to join sales and marketing staff on sales calls and internal meetings
  • Work with the business office and newsroom leadership to set a budget for the project that simultaneously emphasizes fiscal responsibility and smart, opportunistic investment
  • Work with the Communications Department and L.A. Times Studios leadership to build a promotional plan for a major announcement of the initiative that reaches a local and national audience
  • Ensure that all stakeholders and owners meet their planning and production deadlines

Requirements:
  • A minimum of seven years of journalism experience
  • Skill in telling and shaping stories on multiple platforms, including video, audio and social media
  • A track record of leading and managing groups across departments
  • Experience in the creation and planning of consumer-facing events
  • Experience in working with the business side to define editorial projects for the marketplace
  • A valid driver’s license and the willingness to drive if necessary

This is a management position and will be based in El Segundo, Calif.
