Job Overview

The Fred and Clara Eckert Foundation for Children is a private operating foundation whose primary charitable purpose is operating Eckert, a residential substance use disorder treatment program for adolescents in Williston, North Dakota. Eckert provides quality services which encourage the spiritual, educational, behavioral, emotional, and physical development of children and their families. Kitchen Staff are responsible for the planning and preparation of daily meals, maintaining the cleanliness of dishes, work stations and food storage locations. All staff shall familiarize themselves with Trauma Informed and Restorative Approach care for providing care to the youth.

This will be completed by taking the Trauma Informed Care Orientation within 30 days of start date and then latter followed with Restorative Approach and Risking Connections Training. The Confidentiality of each youth is imperative. Initial training on confidentiality and 42 CFR Part 2 will be review by reading policies at orientation and then by participating in training within the first 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Responsibilities will include creating a monthly menu plan utilizing good nutritional values and taking into consideration the varying dietary restrictions of the youth in our program.
  • Kitchen Staff are responsible for the ongoing inventory control and restocking of food, drinks, cleaning supplies and non-office supply paper products with a full inventory being completed on a monthly basis.
  • Order food supplies and kitchen equipment while coordinating with the Facility Administrator to stay within annual budget.
  • Review any dietary restrictions or allergies of youth entering the program.
  • Meal preparations according to meal calendar.
  • Alternate the main location for meal preparation according to youth levels at each home.
  • Maintain inventory records for kitchen appliances and tools in each home making sure that the appliances are comparable in each home.
  • Clean all dishes, workstations, cooking equipment, and food storage areas while maintaining food safety regulations and ensure compliance with state, federal and local food handling requirements, and standards.
  • Check refrigerator and freezer temperatures on a weekly basis.
  • Organize all pantry and food storage areas.
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is operating properly.
  • Reports any necessary repairs to the Maintenance Technician and Facility Administrator.
  • Develop cooking lessons in conjunction with clinical and direct care staff as requested.
  • If also a Certified Medication Assistants (CMA) will dispense and document prescription medication administered to residents, as required; other staff may be needed to dispense Over the Counter medications as needed.
  • Be able to identify emergencies and proceed according to established policies and procedures.
  • Prepare incident reports according to the policy and procedure as necessary.
  • Leave instructions at pass down for the completion of meals for the remainder of the day.
  • Work with a team of people who are charged with the spiritual, educational, behavioral, emotional and physical development of the children and youth in Eckert’s care
  • Attend all required training, with a minimum of 20 hours of training per year

Supervisory Responsibility

There is no supervisory responsibility in this position.

Work Environment

This job is performed in two residential style homes for treatment of adolescents with substance abuse disorders. Youth may come from a background that includes trauma which my result in behaviors that include physically acting out and discourteous language. This position involves planning and organization along with an understanding of nutritional needs of youth in recovery.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and occasionally carry items weighing less than 50 pounds. The employee may also be required to participate in activities with the youth such as basketball, walking and exercising. The employee will be required to walk up and down stairs frequently.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time position for the kitchens staff. The hours are Saturday and Sunday from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Eckert operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Travel

Travel is not required for this position.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or four years of relevant experience;
  • Be 21 years of age or older;
  • Menu planning and cooking experience;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational, time management and multitasking abilities;
  • Thorough knowledge of food safety procedures;
  • Ability to stand for extended periods;
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds;
  • The personal characteristics and experience to collaborate with and provide appropriate care to residents, gain their respect, and assist in guiding their development;
  • The ability to work effectively with the treatment team and other stakeholders;
  • Ability to pass an employee physical, criminal background check, TB screening and drug screen.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Have no child abuse or child neglect charges
