AidData produces novel data, tools, and research that answers the question: who is funding, what, where, for whom, and to what effect around the world? AidData has an explicit focus on data and research that meets high academic standards but is also accessible and relevant for a broad audience of international relations practitioners, policymakers, journalists, and scholars. AidData’s work is made possible by generous financial support of international organizations such as the World Bank and United Nations, private philanthropies such as the Hewlett and Gates Foundations, and government agencies such as the US Department of State and USAID.

Position Summary
The Global Research Institute (GRI) at William & Mary invites applications for a Junior Data Analyst to support AidData’s Research and Evaluation Unit (REU).
The Junior Data Analyst (JDA) assists in data gathering, joining and analysis for Geospatial Impact Evaluations and other research projects. Main responsibilities include:
  • Obtain and/or compiles survey, geospatial, satellite, or other datatypes, and cleans and processes these data prior to analysis
  • Oversee a team of student Research Assistants who geocode the necessary data, including supervising their work and resulting data quality
  • Consults with Principal Investigators or other senior staff on the empirical designs and analytical methods for causal identification, implementing these with some support and oversight.
Where these methods involve big data, the JDA may need to perform this analysis on the high-performance computing cluster (HPC) at W&M. The JDA may also conduct qualitative or contextual research to interpret data or findings and place them in context. The JDA plays a supporting role in preparing reports and papers for publication, and in some cases may be a named author on publications.

Required Qualifications
EDUCATION :
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline, such as economics, international relations, government, statistics, or public policy; or An equivalent combination of training, education, and/or experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS , ABILITIES
  • Demonstrated experience working with complex datasets, statistical software, and impact evaluation methods
  • Demonstrated skill in utilizing new research tools and/or the ability to learn and employ new tools as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a demanding and complex work environment, to carry out assignments in a timely manner, and to adapt to changing situations and priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize, prioritize, and navigate multiple projects while still undertaking day-to-day operations
  • Proven skills in the use of R or Stata
  • Demonstrated ability to clean and analyze data, including building/merging datasets and running regressions

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience communicating statistical analysis and results in writing and in presentations for diverse audiences
  • Familiarity with geospatial software and techniques
  • Knowledge of computer programming languages
