Job Title: Instrumentation Controls Technician (IC)
Compensation: $31/hour - $35/hour
Summary
The Instrumentation Controls Technician is responsible for providing maintenance services and repair functions to facilities and equipment to ensure safety and that production schedules are met. This role will also manage the maintenance of all electronic, mechanical, and pneumatic instruments and controls.
Responsibilities
Safety
- Complies with safety policies and regulations. Assesses job hazards independently. Writes and executes LOTO (Lockout Tagout) and other safety permits.
- Understands and practices operational instrumentation and electrical safety concepts and techniques
- Reports safety incidents and near misses.
Maintenance
- Completes and documents work orders as assigned by utilizing a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
- Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, installs, calibrates, and maintains instrumentation equipment including transmitters, valves, I/P, positioners, actuators, flow meters, tubing, conductivity, RTD, thermocouples, motors, starters, breakers, transformers, isolation switches, relays, fuses, resistors, AC Drives, electrical cable, conduit, receptacles, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), control panels and on-line analyzers.
- Maintains instrumentation calibration schedules and instrumentation maintenance schedules, procedures, and methods.
- Supports mechanical maintenance overhauls and repairs as needed.
- Provides on-call support as needed.
Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoots existing IC systems and utilizes IC knowledge to assist in process and mechanical troubleshooting.
- Tests electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as a multi-meter.
- Reads, interprets, and maintains (as needed) PIDs (piping and instrumentation diagram) and schematic wiring diagrams.
- Perform root cause analysis on failing systems.
Reliability
- Establishes new procedures where necessary to ensure reliability and efficiency.
- Evaluates maintenance program performance and recommend/execute preventive maintenance routines, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance analytics.
- Recommends spare part inventory for critical IE components.
- Provides IE training for shift team members to build capability within the team
Project Work
- Supports instrument items specification and procurement.
- Collaborates with technicians of other disciplines in project meetings and during project execution and commissioning. Assist in commissioning new systems.
- Updates instrumentation installation drawings, data sheets, and specifications.

Requirements

- Associates degree or certification in Instrumentation, Industrial control / automation, or related technical discipline. Must have a minimum of 3 years' related experience in an industrial setting.
- Experience completing CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) driven work is required.
- Proficiency with automation/instrumentation systems is required.
- Must have strong understanding of Electrical safety, including Arc Flash PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and Hazardous Locations requirements.
- Must be able to read/understand PIDs to identify instruments and control loops.
- Must be able to read control wiring loop sheets, electrical ladder, and single line diagrams. Also, must be capable of redlining these drawings.
- Experience with instrument calibration is required.
- Must be able to use a multi-meter to troubleshoot control systems safely and effectively.
- Understanding of Ethernet/IP is desired. Modbus TCP knowledge a plus.
- Knowledge and interpretation of National Electric Code, knowledge of IEEE standards and knowledge of UL508A a plus.
- Must be knowledgeable in Microsoft Office.
- Must have the ability to:
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, machine schematics, and procedure manuals, and draft routine reports and correspondence.
- Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and communicate outcomes.
