Nature of Work

Provide network design, configuration, implementation, support and technical expertise for LAN/WAN interfaces, security, VLANs, Internet protocols and TCP/IP, wireless, server and network infrastructure; install new/upgraded capabilities on network; maintain CISCO VOIP network; manage LAN/WAN and all networking & intercommunications of multiple sites; perform other duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

  • Perform network design, configuration, implementation, support, and technical expertise for LAN/WAN interfaces, security, VLANs, Internet protocols and TCP/IP, wireless, server, and network infrastructure on a 24x7x365 basis.
  • Perform site surveys, design, test, and install new/upgraded capabilities on HCSO network.
  • Support core services to include e-mail, web browsing, and VOIP, IP camera systems and access control systems.
  • Manage LAN/WAN and all networking & intercommunications of multiple sites, to include those allied agencies with network connections to HCSO.
  • Design, maintain and monitor firewall configuration and policy, network routing design and configuration, VPN, proxy, and various data, telephony, and network security measures.
  • Maintain Cisco VOIP network.
  • Aid in continuing disaster recovery plans, development, and implementation.
  • Review, test, and evaluate network systems to determine performance issues, eliminate problems, and make improvements.
  • Provide tactical and strategic input on overall network planning and related projects.
  • Assume responsibility for the development and implementation of security policies, procedures, and measures in a networking environment.
  • Provide technical engineering and best practices for overall security of the organizations network infrastructure.
  • Responsible for continual improvement of network infrastructure and implementation of new security-based technologies.
  • Participate in emergency response and off-hours maintenance/upgrades.
  • Design, implement, and maintain all end user computer system hardware and software.
  • Keep director and relevant others informed of issues in a timely fashion.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationship with Agency and County staff.
  • Keep informed on current information technology practices by attending workshops and educations programs or reading specialized literature.
  • Manage HCSO side of the private network used for mobile vehicles.
  • Attend meetings and participate in various teams when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of network support, design and implementation experience.
  • Network+ Certification and MSCE preferred.
  • Experience with Cisco network equipment, Cisco certification(s) preferred.
  • OR equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff’s Office to the public.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of computer and network operations.
  • Knowledge of programming concepts and job control languages appropriate to the assignment.
  • Knowledge of computer security procedures.
  • Ability to establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently to accommodate numerous deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; successfully communicate with other staff members, County staff, and members of the public; and work as a team.
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.
  • Ability to respond properly in emergency situations and complete assignments under pressure.
  • Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and office machines.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Selected Candidate:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable U.S. residency.
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with no more than three (3) points.
  • Must provide handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from an Oral Interview Board.
  • Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and good interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
