Main Function of a Housekeeping Attendant
Promote and maintain clean and sanitary conditions to prevent the spread of infection by accomplishing assigned cleaning tasks in assigned work areas and to give high priority to resident and employee safety.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Housekeeping Attendant
Following established routines, practices and procedures:
- Dust mops and wet mops floors in all rooms, bathrooms, corridors and lobbies.
- Damp dust furniture, light covers, windowsills, radiators, etc. in assigned areas. Damp dust all ledges around tile walls in bathrooms.
- Thoroughly cleans restrooms, toilets, sinks, tile, tubs and showers.
- Remove trash, washes all wastebaskets and relines with clean liners
- Spot clean walls and clean vents.
- Straightens all furniture, curtains and drapes in assigned areas.
- Checks cubicle and shower curtains for cleanliness and needed repair.
- Checks window curtains and shades/blinds cleanliness and needed repair.
- Cleans resident units designated as isolation, in assigned areas.
- Clean and disinfect unoccupied residents’ units, bed, closets and bed stands, inside and outside.
- Clean and disinfect residents’ wheelchairs, recliners, and rock-n-goes.
- Raise, move, and clean beds and bedside stands and behind them. Return to proper positions and lock bed brakes.
- Wash baseboards and corners.
- Vacuum carpet areas.
- Maintain equipment in good condition; report to immediate supervisor any mechanical failures or repairs needed in the building or equipment.
- Attend mandatory In-services and other educational programs. Keep informed on Safety, Fire and Disaster programs.
- Remove cobwebs in assigned work area.
- Buff, top scrub, strip and refinish floors when needed.
- Shampoo carpets when needed.
- Wash inside windows – outside of windows first floor areas only.
- Is polite and pleasant to residents, visitors and co-workers at all times.
- Practices Universal Standards in the work place.
- Perform all other related duties as required.

Additional Duties when working evening/night shift
- All lounges and Fine Dining Rooms are to be cleaned, tables and chairs wiped with germicide. Floors are to be dust mopped and wet mopped.
- All soiled attends are to be removed following policy and procedure.
- Clean the wheelchairs and geri-chairs as assigned or as observed using the wheel chair washer.
- Clean windowsills in the lounges with vacuum cleaner.
- Soiled linen must be removed from soiled linen chutes and taken to the laundry.
- Burnish floors as designated by department director.
Education for a Housekeeping Attendant
High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Must attend In-service programs and serve a training period under an experienced Housekeeping Attendant.
Experience
Experience preferred but not required.
Working Conditions
Exposed to heat and humidity, dust, and chemicals used as cleaning agents and unpleasant odors.
Physical Demands
To accomplish tasks outlined above, an employee will need a variety of physical and mental abilities including the following:
- Ability to perform a high level of physical activity in a normal workday.
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to stoop, stretch, bend, squat and crouch without difficulty.
- Ability to handle and use equipment such as buckets, mops, buffers, etc.
- Ability to use both hands to open locks, clean storm windows and light fixture panels.
- Ability to lift forty- (40) pounds unassisted.
- Ability to raise arms overhead to remove drapes and cubicle curtains.
- Ability to climb a ladder.
- Must be capable of observing and correcting any physical conditions that could create a hazard to residents or employees.
- Ability to deal appropriately with residents and co-workers.
