US Army Occupation Specialty 68W Healthcare Specialist/Paramedic

Overview:
As a Healthcare Specialist, you will administer emergency medical care in the field in both combat and humanitarian situations. You will serve as a first responder and triage illnesses and injuries to save lives. You will also train other Soldiers in lifesaver/first responder courses.
Job Duties:
  • Administer emergency medical treatment to battlefield casualties
  • Assist with outpatient and inpatient care and treatment
  • Prepare blood samples for laboratory analysis
  • Prepare patients, operating rooms, equipment and supplies for surgery

Requirements:
  • Those who want to serve must first take a series of tests that helps you better understand your strengths and identify which Army jobs are best for you.
  • You may be qualified for ACASP if you already have your EMT certificate.

Basic Eligibility:
  • Age 17-34 (age waiver up to 40 may be considered)
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED
  • Citizen of the United States or green card
  • No major medical issues
  • No major criminal issues

Training:
Training for a healthcare specialist requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training, and 16 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, including practice in patient care.

Some of the skills you will learn are:
  • Patient care techniques
  • Emergency medical techniques
  • Methods of sterilizing surgical equipment
  • Plaster-casting techniques

  • General Technical (GT): 107
  • Skilled Technical (ST): 101

Compensation:
