Overview:
Ashland University is an NCAA Division II institution that competes in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC). Ashland University offers a comprehensive 26-sport athletic program. The university is located off of Interstate 71 in Ashland, Ohio, midway between Cleveland and Columbus.

Job Description:
Ashland University seeks candidates for the head football coaching position. This position will direct and oversee the entire football program, which includes recruiting, retention, training, game preparation, practice and in-game coaching, direction and recruitment of assistant coaches, budget management and oversight and fundraising.

  • Candidates should have the ability to teach proper technique and skill development in various aspects of football.
  • Candidates should have a complete and thorough understanding of the sport and be able to instruct student-athletes in small group and one-on-one settings.
  • The football coach will work with the director of athletics to build short-term and long-term goals for the program. The football coach and athletic director will work to build a vision that addresses the areas of facilities, fundraising, recruiting, retention, roster makeup, promotion, academic success and off-the-field programming.
  • Applicants should be well versed and able to instruct student-athletes on physical health, team concepts and team building exercises, team development techniques and safety.
  • Candidates should have the ability to produce a full yearly schedule and plan that covers off-season conditioning, spring football, fall camp and in-season practice and games.
  • The head coach will oversee a staff that includes full-time and part-time coaches, volunteer coaches, graduate assistant coaches and student coaches. The head coach will determine responsibilities and job descriptions and provide guidance for the entire staff. The head coach will be responsible for annual evaluations of each assistant coach and for staff development.
  • This position reports to the director of athletics. It will work closely on a daily basis with the equipment coordinator, strength and conditioning coaches, athletic trainers, athletic communications, admissions, advancement, financial aid, counseling, compliance, game operations and the assistant athletic director for academic support
  • The head football coach also sits on the board of the Gridiron Club, the fundraising arm for football. This club meets 10 times a year and the head coach will attend meetings, offer guidance and direction on how club funds can be best used, and identify and prioritize needs of the football program that the club can help address.
  • The head football coach should become the face of the program and work with the director of athletics and the athletic department to promote the program on campus, in the community and throughout northeast and north central Ohio.
  • A thorough understanding of NCAA and GMAC rules and regulations is required. The head coach must adhere to these rules and ensure that the program is in compliance with all rules, regulations and guidelines. The ability to articulate these to student-athletes is also required.
  • The head coach will attend all GMAC football head coaches meetings.
  • Ashland University’s football program offers a wide range of summer football clinics and camps during the summer months. The camp program falls under the direction of the head football coach, who will work with his staff to offer camps each summer and at other times in the year that are appropriate.
  • An understanding of Ashland University’s mission and goals is required. Applicants must have the ability to explain these to student-athletes.
  • This position requires the ability to recruit potential student-athletes. The head coach is responsible for meeting all Ashland University roster requirements.
  • The head coach is responsible for monitoring academic progress of all student-athletes on the team and working with various constituencies across campus to ensure that student-athletes receive the proper academic counseling and assistance.
  • This position could require other assignments as assigned by the athletic director. These could include fundraising and representing the athletic department at various functions.

Required Qualifications
Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required
  • Candidates must have the ability to successfully impart sport-specific knowledge
  • Previous coaching and/or playing experience on the college level is highly desired
  • The ability to identify and recruit student-athletes is required
  • This position requires well-developed communication skills, as well as strong time management and organizational skills
  • The ability to manage a budget is desired
  • The ability to work weekends and evenings is required. This position requires extensive travel, both in recruiting and to games
